Norway, Ireland, and Spain announced on Wednesday that they would recognize a Palestinian state, adding themselves to the list of 140 countries that already recognize the state of Palestine. This move is being viewed as a “huge blow” to Israel. This development comes after Israel's 8 month siege on the Gaza Strip, which has led even some of Israel's closest allies to reconsider their relationship with the country. The official recognition by these countries is set to occur on May 28 and has drawn heavy criticism from Israeli officials. Israel Katz, the Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister, expressed his disapproval by stating, “History will remember that Spain, Norway, and Ireland decided to award a gold medal to Hamas murderers and rapists." Adding fuel to the fire, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir made a visit to the Al-Aqsa mosque on May 22, a site revered by both Jews and Muslims and a known flashpoint in Jerusalem, in direct response to Norway, Ireland and Spain’s decision.
