🔔 What Not to Do! 🔗 Don`t Learn BIG WORDS I’ve been told by some professors at my university that the more big words you use in your writing and speaking, the higher band score you’ll get. Time invested in learning complicated terms and phrases will pay off you’ll get a good IELTS score and a round of applause from the examiner. Tempting, isn’t it? But it’s not the best approach. Using big words and complicated terms don’t show that you have a wide range of vocabulary because they are very difficult to use naturally. Instead of applause, you’re more likely to see the examiner rolling his eyes or squinting in confusion. I also figured out that the methods I was using to improve my lexical resource -- sorry! -- my vocabulary, were all wrong. I learned this lesson the hard way working with an IELTS expert. Don’t try to stuff your brain full of words that are as rare and obscure as unicorns. Examiners won’t be impressed. They’ll see right through you and mark you down because your precious big words are unnatural. The real vocabulary to learn. So, what’s the right way to you improve your vocabulary and sound like a native speaker? What works for me now is learning vocabulary by topic. For example, if you want to talk about technology, choose words that people often use: gadget, device, innovation, latest, etc. By doing this, not only can you flexibly discuss specific situations but you can also more easily remember the vocabulary list. I'm sure your score will improve a lot and you’ll feel more confident taking the test! You made a list of vocabulary divided into themes and topics. Good start. But to learn all of them looks like an unscalable mountain. I found a very useful tip on the web about this: You learn/memorize the word first, recite it, then leave it there for some time. After a while, test yourself to see how much you can remember. If you happen to forget something, repeat the process. The amount of information input to your brain will gradually accumulate over time. But don’t fool yourself! Knowing a word is very different from knowing how to use it naturally and accurately. Don’t just learn verbatim from your vocabulary lists. Try to use them on a daily basis to get familiar with the expressions. Make sure those words will march through your mind and out your mouth even though you’re shaking with fear on the test. Then you are sure to earn that richly deserved standing ovation from the examiner! P.S: Good luck on your test! Guys, Keep active in Reactions🫂 #Writing #Writing9 @englishessay12
