‘Economic Statecraft’
broadly defined as the deliberate use of economic means to achieve strategic end
it has witnessed a rapid resurgence. This shift reflects rising geopolitical competition, concerns over technological dominance and vulnerabilities exposed in traditional global value chains.
Economic policy employs traditional instruments, including fiscal, monetary, and trade tools, to achieve economic objectives such as reducing deficits, controlling inflation, and promoting economic growth.
Economic statecraft goes a step further by employing economic tools to achieve foreign policy or national security objectives, such as compelling a country to stop hostilities with a third party or to liberalise its markets.

Balance of payment
The total amount of dollars flowing out of the country exceeded inflows by $30.8 billion in 2025-26, a more than six-fold increase over 2024-25.
The overall Balance of Payments is a combination of the
1)current account
2)capital account.
1)The current account captures India’s trade in goods and services as well as some cross-border financial transactions.
2)The capital account largely deals with investments, both direct and portfolio, external borrowings, external assistance, and asset transfers.
Reasons
India generally runs a current account deficit (CAD) since it imports more than it exports. Over the last five years, this CAD has varied significantly, but came in at a three-year high of $30.2 billion 2025-26.
he capital account surplus that year shrank to $72 million, down more than 99.5% over the $16.6 billion seen in 2024-25.

What are plastic banknotes?
Plastic banknotes, officially known as polymer banknotes, are currency notes made from a thin, flexible plastic substrate, called polymer, instead of the cotton-based paper which is used in traditional banknotes.
Despite being called “plastic” notes, they are not rigid like credit or debit cards. Polymer notes are lightweight, flexible and can be folded and handled much like conventional paper currency.
The key difference is durability. Polymer banknotes generally last much longer than paper notes because they are more resistant to dirt, moisture, and tearing. This reduces the number of damaged notes that can no longer be used and need to be replaced.

What is 5G slicing?
This is creating segments within a telecom carrier’s network for specialised use, such as building fast lanes with low latency or dedi- cated lanes ensuring all-time con- nectivity. Services based on 5G slicing are there in markets like Sin- gapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia.
“Network slicing is the only proven
large scale monetisation model on 5G today and is foundational to future 6G networks. For India to stay competitive, embracing such tech- nology advancements is essential.

IndiGo reports net loss of ~2,537 crore
why?
1)A large part of their expenses — aircraft leases, maintenance, and fuel — are paid in US dollars, while most revenue comes in rupees. When the rupee weakens (as it has recently), costs rise sharply.
2)Fuel is the single largest expense (around 40% of total costs). Global oil prices have increased due to the West Asia crisis, significantly raising operating costs.
3)The West Asia conflict forced airlines to cut many international flights (especially to West Asia and Europe), leading to lower revenue.

What is Coking Coal?
1)Coking coal (also called metallurgical coal) is a high-quality coal used mainly to produce coke. Coke is a key raw material in steel manufacturing. When heated in the absence of air, coking coal turns into coke, which is used in blast furnaces to extract iron from iron ore.
2)It has special properties: high carbon content, low impurities, and the ability to form a strong, porous coke when heated.
Steps Taken by Ministry of Coal to Reduce Coking Coal Imports
1Mission Coking Coal launched to boost domestic production.
Target: Increase production to 140 million tonnes (MT) by FY 2029-30.
Production Target for CIL Subsidiaries:
Raise output from 60.43 MT (FY 2023-24) to 105 MT by FY 2029-30.
Modernisation of Washeries:
Upgrading old washeries of BCCL and CCL for better efficiency.

Russia-China Relations: Putin’s Visit to Beijing
Context
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing on 19 May 2026, just days after US President Donald Trump’s visit. Such back-to-back high-level visits highlight China’s growing centrality in global diplomacy.
Main Reasons for Putin’s Visit
1)Seek continued economic and political support from China amid Western sanctions over Ukraine.
2)Strengthen the “no-limits partnership” declared in 2022.
3)Counterbalance US influence and push for a multipolar world order.
Best wishes to everyone of you appearing for exam tomorrow.
Have presence of mind. Remind all the things you planned and visualise every thing going well in the exam.
Be calm to the extent possible. Nervousness will be there. That's ok.
All the best!

Supreme Court Order on Stray Dogs
1)The Supreme Court refused to modify its November 7, 2025 order directing all States and Union Territories to remove stray dogs from high-footfall public places.
2)These places include educational institutions, hospitals, bus depots, and railway stations.
3)The Court clarified that stray dogs cannot be re-released into these institutional areas even after vaccination and sterilisation.
4)It emphasised a harmonious reading of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
5)The Bench observed that the right to live with dignity under Article 21 includes citizens’ right to move freely without fear of dog bites or attacks.
6)The Court allowed municipal authorities to take legally permissible measures, including euthanasia for rabid, incurably ill, or demonstrably dangerous/aggressive dogs after veterinary assessment.

SHANTI Act 2025
A petition filed by retired bureaucrat E.A.S. Sarma (represented by Prashant Bhushan) challenges the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, 2025.
Key Challenges:
1)Allowing private sector and foreign corporations to operate nuclear power plants in India.
2)Capping operator liability at an “absurdly low level” of less than ₹4,000 crore.
3)Exempting suppliers from liability in case of a nuclear accident.

Economic Growth in India
The United Nations (UN DESA) has lowered India’s economic growth forecast for 2026 from 6.6% to 6.4%.
Main Reason:
Ongoing West Asia crisis, rising energy import costs, and global uncertainties.
India remains one of the fastest-growing major economies despite the revision.
Forecast for 2027:
6.6%.
Why the Downgrade?
1)India is a large energy importer (85%+ of crude oil).
2)Higher oil prices are increasing inflation and import bills.
Global financial tightening is making monetary policy more challenging.
3)Remittances and export slowdowns add to vulnerability.
Many students face these common struggles before prelims D day

FOWE’s Cavitech Fuel Emulsion Technology
A Monaco-based company, FOWE Eco Solutions, has developed Cavitech — a technology that mixes tiny water droplets into fuel oil using Controlled Cavitation Technology (CCT). No chemicals are used.
How it Works
When this water-fuel emulsion burns, the water droplets create micro-explosions inside the combustion chamber. This breaks the fuel into ultra-fine particles, leading to more complete and efficient burning.
Main Benefits Claimed
1)Fuel Savings: Up to 10% reduction in fuel consumption.
2)Emission Reduction:
NOx by ~30%
SOx by ~40%
Particulate Matter → near zero
3)No need to modify engines or shut down plants.
4)Reduces viscosity of heavy fuel oil → lower pumping and heating costs.
Extends maintenance intervals.
