Passage Many historians argue that the rapid expansion of railways in the 19th century played a crucial role in shaping modern economies. Rail transport significantly reduced the cost and time required to move goods, which allowed industries to expand beyond local markets. As a result, factories were no longer restricted to areas near rivers or ports. However, some scholars believe that the importance of railways has been exaggerated. They point out that economic growth had already begun before the railway boom and that other factors, such as technological innovation and population growth, also contributed significantly. While railways undoubtedly accelerated development, they were not the sole cause of industrial expansion. Question Railways were the only factor responsible for economic growth during the 19th century.
