HTTPS hides what you're reading, not that you're reading at all.
Time to answer the crucial questions: What do they see? Why does it matter? And how do we stop them?
The core problem is that your ISP sits between you and the entire internet. Every website you visit, every app you open, every device on your home network routes through them. They don't see content, but they do see destinations, timings, volumes, and patterns.
ISPs can see: the domains you visit, when and how long for, how much data is transferred, your approximate location, and what devices are on your network. A 2021 FTC report found major ISPs combined this data into ad profiles and sold this to advertisers.
The real trap is you probably can't switch ISPs. Most markets have one or two options. Unlike Meta or Google, you can't log out. They have your traffic hostage. Structural surveillance is much harder to escape than commercial surveillance.
Some ISPs own email products, streaming services, smart home gear. They can stitch data across services to build richer profiles. The incentives here don't point toward your ISP protecting your privacy. These data are valuable.
Some ISPs control physical infrastructure too, meaning they can throttle your connection. Verizon slowed an emergency response vehicle's connection in 2018 until firefighters paid for a higher tier of their service. They control both the pipes and the terms.
A newer risk is Wi-Fi sensing, where some routers can detect presence and motion through walls using reflected signals. Industry estimates suggest tens of millions of US households already have access to some level of this technology through provided hardware.
So, what stops them?
- VPN = ISP sees only that you're connected to a VPN server, not where you're going.
- Encrypted DNS (DoH, DoT) = Hides which domains you're asking for.
- Your own router = You control firmware. They don't.
- HTTPS = Stops them reading page contents.
No single tool solves this, but combining different pieces allows you to shrink what your ISP collects from "almost everything" to "you're online and using data." This is a substantial difference in terms of information being passively collected on what you're up to.
The bigger picture is that ISPs occupy a structural surveillance position we all accept. Practical defence beats hoping for regulation.

Here's a practical guide to rooting it out and removing it. Don't reach for some random "security" app first. Follow these steps instead.
We're writing this for a Pixel running Android 16. Steps are the same on other Android devices (10-15), though labels may differ slightly. Samsung in particular renames a lot of the menu paths.
Step 1: Run a Play Protect scan
Play Protect runs malware scans automatically, but it's sometimes disabled by accident.
Open Play Store → tap your profile icon → Play Protect → Settings → turn "Scan apps with Play Protect" ON. Then repeat the first three steps and press Scan.
If you've sideloaded apps, you can also enable "Improve harmful app detection" on the Play Protect settings screen for a more thorough scan. Just know it sends unrecognised apps to Google while active, so consider switching it off again afterwards.
Step 2: Check for operating system updates
Malware often exploits vulnerabilities in outdated software.
- Pixel: Settings → System → Software updates
- Samsung: Settings → Software update → Download & install
- Other devices: look for an update option under Settings
If it says your system is up to date, you're already on the latest version. On to step 3.
Step 3: Find and remove suspicious apps
Play Protect flags known threats, but this step catches anything it missed.
Tap Settings → Apps → See all apps (Samsung may show the full list without a second tap). Look for apps you don't recognise, apps with generic system-sounding names ("System Service", "Phone Manager"), or apps installed around when the problems started (tap an app to see its install date). Found something suspicious? Tap it → Uninstall.
If Uninstall is greyed out, the app likely has device admin privileges. Go to Settings → Security & privacy → More security and privacy → Device admin apps (on Samsung: Settings → Security and privacy → More security settings → Device admin apps, sometimes under "Other security settings"). Select the app → Deactivate (or toggle it off), confirm the warning, then uninstall it.
If it still won't uninstall, boot into safe mode: only system apps run there, so third-party apps can't block removal. Press and hold the power button, then press and hold Power off until "Reboot to safe mode" appears, and tap OK. On some Samsung models you tap and hold Power off directly rather than a button. If neither works, search "safe mode" plus your device model. Once in safe mode, try the uninstall again via the same path, then restart normally to exit.
Step 4: Run a secondary scan with a free, trusted tool
Still not clean? Time to bring in a proper scanner. Many "cleaner" apps are themselves malicious, so we recommend Malwarebytes: well-rated, recommended by researchers, and the free version is enough. Before installing, check the Play Store listing's Developer contact or App support section for a real contact email, address, and website. Once installed, open it, run a scan, and tap Quarantine on anything it finds.
Step 5: Run a security checkup
Your device should be clean now, but the infection may have already compromised your accounts by intercepting credentials, reading SMS, or logging keystrokes. Go to myaccount.google.com/security-checkup and work through it: check for unfamiliar devices signed into your account, revoke access for any third-party apps you don't recognise, and review recent security activity. Change passwords for anything that may have been exposed.
If all else fails: factory reset
This wipes the device completely and can't be undone. Back up photos and files to cloud storage (Proton Drive or similar) first, since anything not backed up is gone for good.
Pixel: Settings → System → Reset options → Erase all data (factory reset)
Samsung: Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset
Once it's done, don't restore from a full backup, since that can bring the malware straight back. Reinstall trusted apps manually from the Play Store instead.
Keeping it from happening again: keep your OS and apps updated, be careful what you install, use a VPN on public WiFi, and use a unique password per account. Proton VPN and Proton Pass both help here. | 9 630 |

Sometimes, the old ways are better...
Most privacy advice is about adding things. Add a VPN, change your email client, browser extensions, paid subscriptions, another layer of defence. It can be exhausting, and it’s a permanent rearguard action… you’re always one step behind whatever clever new side channel someone published this week.
So here’s a piece of advice that goes the other way. Instead of adding a defence, remove the surveillance apparatus entirely. Change how you consume information on the web so that there’s nothing to track in the first place.
The tool for this is twenty-nine years old, completely free, and most people think it died with Google Reader in 2013. They are wrong.
It’s RSS, and it is quietly one of the best privacy upgrades available to a normal person who doesn’t want to run Tor to read the news.
The Whole Trick Is “Pull, Not Push”
To see why RSS is private, you have to see why everything else isn’t.
A modern feed: your timeline, your For You page, Google Discover, the algorithmic slop on every app you own, is a push system. The platform decides what to show you. And to decide well, it has to model you: what you linger on, what you tap, what you scroll past, who you are, what you’ll click next. The surveillance isn’t a bug or an addon. It is the product. An algorithmic feed that didn’t profile you couldn’t function, because profiling you is the entire mechanism by which it chooses what to serve.
RSS is a pull system, and the difference is like night and day. A website publishes a plain, structured list of its recent posts… that’s the “feed,” a simple file sitting at a public address. Your reader checks that file on a schedule and shows you what’s new, from the sources that you’ve selected and in chronological order.
There is no algorithm, because you are the algorithm, you have complete control in a way that is deeply refreshing on the modern web. There’s no robot deciding what’s “relevant,” because relevance was settled the moment you chose to subscribe.
Critically, there is no account.
You don’t log in to RSS. There’s no profile, because the system has no need for one. A pull system doesn’t have to know anything about you to do its job, it just fetches the thing you asked for and hands it over.
There are no engagement metrics, no "suggested for you," and no recommendation engine that has to study you to feed you.
You took a part of the web that exists to surveil you and simply deleted it: bbye 👋
What This Actually Buys You
Strip out the algorithm and a pile of privacy problems vanish as a side effect rather than as something you had to fight for.
You’re not building an advertising profile, because nobody’s collecting the signals to build one. You’re not being A/B tested into rage or doom-scrolling, because no one’s optimising your attention. You’re not handing a single company a complete map of your interests, politics, health worries, and 2am reading habits, because your reading list lives with you, not on their server.
RSS allows you to escape this algorithmic manipulation layer entirely with chronological ordering from chosen sources; that is about as unmanipulated as the modern web gets.
There’s a quieter benefit too, and it matters for the privacy-minded specifically: RSS makes you a smaller, harder target. RSS re-decentralises your reading, meaning that your interests stop being a row in someone’s database.
Now The Honest Part
RSS is not a magic privacy cloak, and anyone who tells you it is hasn’t thought it through. Here are two caveats, because overselling this helps nobody.
Not all readers are equal. A cloud reader like Feedly or Inoreader is enormously convenient and will happily sync across your devices… this being said, it does so by holding your entire feed list and reading activity on their servers, and some of them bolt an AI assistant on top that is, definitionally, processing what you read. That’s a much weaker privacy posture than the pitch above. The strong version of this argument applies to local-first or self-hosted readers, where no third party sits between you and the feeds at all.
The publisher still sees a request. When your reader fetches a site’s feed, that site’s server sees an IP address asking for it, same as if you’d visited the page. RSS doesn’t make you invisible to the people you’re reading. But here’s the elegant bit: with a self-hosted or hosted reader, the reader fetches on your behalf, so the publisher sees the server’s address, not yours. One box quietly reads everything; you read the box. It’s a genuine improvement over visiting each site directly, where every publisher and their embedded trackers get a clean look at you.
A good reader will also strip tracking pixels out of feed content, which some feeds still try to smuggle in.
In summary, you are not getting invisibility, but rather a dramatic reduction in who’s watching, and a clean break from the profiling machine. That’s a real win, and it’s an honest one.
How To Actually Start
The barrier to entry is genuinely low:
- Pick a reader that matches your privacy appetite.
- If you want sync and full control, self-host.
- Find the feeds. Most sites still publish one even if they don’t advertise it. Look for the orange icon, or just try adding /feed, /rss, or /feed.xml to a site’s address.
- Start small and prune. Subscribe to ten sources you actually trust, read through your own list for a week, and cut anything that’s just noise. The discipline of choosing your own inputs is, it turns out, half the point.
- Keep your OPML. Your whole subscription list exports to a single standard file. That means you’re never locked in… you can switch readers whenever you like and carry everything with you. Try doing that with a social feed.
The Bigger Picture
We spend a lot of time around here cataloguing surveillance that’s been quietly welded onto things you can’t opt out of: the camera that reads your devices, the browser feature that leaks your tabs, the ad company that owns the browser. The pattern is always the same: a system built for one thing grows an appetite for watching you, and you’re left bolting on defences after the fact.
RSS is the rare counter-example. It’s the version of the web where the private option is also the free option, the older option, and frankly the nicer option. With RSS you can choose to read things in the order they happened, fetched by a tool that works for you instead of for an advertiser.
The most effective privacy move isn’t always a new gadget. Sometimes it’s going back and picking up the good thing we put down because a single company made it briefly inconvenient.

Here's the real issue: enforcing an age ban means platforms have to collect biometric data, facial scans, ID photos. It turns every social app into an identity verification checkpoint. That's a massive privacy trade-off to achieve something that probably won't work anyway.
The actual problem is algorithmic amplification, infinite scroll, engagement-at-all-costs design. That affects adults just as much as children. A ban on under-16s doesn't touch any of that. It doesn't make platforms less toxic. It just removes some young people from them.
Protecting kids online is urgent and necessary. But the mechanism matters. Mass biometric collection to access services? That introduces risks as serious as the ones it's meant to prevent.
The real answer: make the internet less harmful for everyone. That means fixing the business models and algorithms, not building surveillance infrastructure.
