Mamdani's funding of a public trans health clinic is incredibly precedent-setting, considering we live in a time where hospitals/clinics are throwing trans people under the bus and condoning trans genocide. This, however, pushes back against that direction and says something extremely important: If private healthcare won't provide adequate care to trans people, then public healthcare can and should. Unfortunately and understandably, people are getting hooked up on an "all-or-nothing" mindset. While the choice to make the clinic accessible only to adults (19 and above) is frustrating, it is doomerist to completely deny the significance of this act; it is also counter-productive that we've gotten to the point of calling Mamdani transphobic and insinuating that he is one step away from partaking in trans genocide. This is not to say you should not be upset about the adults-only decision, but rather that it shouldn't lead you to being blackpilled. Take that anger and channel it in productive ways. Mobilize, push further, make noise— we've already seen that Mamdani is incredibly receptive to the voices of the communities in this country, and there's zero reason to assume someone like him, who has openly run on protecting trans rights, has any malice towards the queer community. But, I think there is a difference between holding Mamdani to account and painting him as closed-off, corrupt, secretly transphobic politician. It feeds doomerism, gives ammo to the same corrupt liberals that use us as prop, and discards the potential opening we have here to push for trans rights and liberation. All in all, I think he should be mostly commended for this decision, and also held to account and pushed to do more.
