🇻🇪 Venezuala’s communal movement embodies 21st century socialism. In 2006, Hugo Chávez oversaw the construction of communal councils across Venezuela, identifying the communal form as “the cells of socialism.” In part 4 of this 6-part series, we explore how Venezuela’s communes meet people’s needs, encourage popular protagonism, and defend against imperialism.

🇬🇩 On this day in 1983, revolutionary leader of the New Jewel Movement (NJM) and Prime Minister of Grenada Maurice Bishop was assassinated. Six days later, the US invaded Grenada, cutting short the country’s popular socialist project. The defeat of the Grenada Revolution sands as a reminder that the capitalist world system - despite all its institutions, treaties, and agreements - is, at its core, built on violence.

While communal structures are commonly associated with more anarchist or autonomist projects, the commune has historically been a key element of socialist construction. 🪢 In part 1 of this 6-part series, we recover an understanding of communes as located within a process of socialist transition.

🤖 If AI really does pose an existential risk to humanity, then why are companies continuing to develop it? The AI race is revealing of capitalism’s core logic: the structural necessity to compete for profit, even if it leads to catastrophic outcomes. 🤝 On September 19th, 1960, Fidel Castro and Malcolm X met in Harlem. Fidel’s visit to Harlem transformed an attempt by the US government to isolate the Cuban Revolution into a powerful moment of solidarity between the Cuban people and the Black freedom struggle in the heart of empire. Their encounter reflects the connection between struggles for self-determination, liberation, and "full human dignity" of all oppressed people.

🔥 This is only the beginning. The largest El Niño in 1,000 years is currently gaining strength, which will “blow apart” previous records and make 2027 the hottest year ever recorded. Meanwhile, the British state is expect to approve new oil and gas projects in the North Sea, pouring fuel onto the fire. We need eco-socialist system change to ensure our collective future.
