Repost from N/a
For a five year old little girl the world is supposed to feel completely safe. Imagine her tiny hands trembling, her little heart pounding. She doesn't even know the words that explain the fear inside her. Just a child. She should've been crying just because she scraped her knee and falling asleep with her favorite toy beside her. She should've known hugs as comfort. She deserved a childhood untouched by someone else's cruelty. She was five. Five.

What a shitload of ballocks. Despite claiming to be based in Washington DC, if you open the channel most of the videos repeats underlying idea - How Takaev’s Kazakhstan is great and amazing, the leader of all existing states of the universe, saviour of lakes and oceans, ultra planet loving and breathtaking. Hmm… Uzbeks? Oh they are bunch of religious fanatics who always copy their one and only Shahanshah of jumlai Alam neighbouring country. P.s: Qõshnilarimiz iqtisodiy taraqqiyotga erishibdi-you ammo hali hamon boshqalarni yerga urmasdan ham õzini uluğlay olish mumkunligini õrganishmabdi. I’m quite a secular person, yet anyone who has prejudice because of my non-religious association didn’t show up to threaten me physically for years by now.

You can have a thought that you would never want another person to hear, and still choose not to turn that thought into an action. And perhaps that is one of the more interesting things about being human. We are constantly interpreting other people while knowing almost nothing about them. And then, occasionally, something as insignificant as an elderly man sitting behind you on a bus reminds you that there is probably an entire life behind every face you see. We simply do not get to read it.

Today, I had one of those very strange moments where you suddenly become aware of yourself being human. I was on the bus. When I got on, there was one seat available, so naturally I took it. Unfortunately, the seat was facing opposite to the direction in which the bus was moving, and for some reason, whenever I sit like that, I tend to get a headache. After one stop, I noticed another seat becoming available, so I changed my seat. Then, after another couple of stops, two more seats became free. I thought, why not move closer to the window? I had another thirty-plus minutes of travelling ahead of me, I was already rather tired and had very little energy left, so I simply wanted to lean against the window and continue my journey in peace. And then something rather unpleasant happened. There was an elderly gentleman sitting directly behind me. Not next to me, but immediately behind me. And, trying to put this as politely as I possibly can, there was a very unpleasant odour coming from him. It reminded me of food leftovers. The sort of smell you associate with things that have already been thrown into the bin and have been sitting there for a while. I was genuinely uncomfortable. Not merely slightly irritated. I was getting to the point where I felt as though I might actually throw up. And, in my head, I started cursing the poor man. I was thinking, for God’s sake, can you not take a bath? At least once a week? Why do you have to smell like this? Obviously, none of this was said aloud. It all happened inside my head. But nevertheless, I was so uncomfortable that I had to move again. And this was the second time I had changed my seat. Then, when I finally stood up and turned around, I actually saw his face. And something about his face completely changed the way I was looking at the situation. He looked… pure, somehow. Not in some romanticised sense. He simply looked like an elderly man who had probably had a difficult life. He looked like someone who had struggled. And suddenly I thought: perhaps he cannot help it. Perhaps he does not have the circumstances that allow him to take a proper bath whenever he wants. Perhaps there is something about his life that I know absolutely nothing about. And that made me think about people more generally. Not every unpleasant teenager is unpleasant simply because that is their nature. Perhaps some of them are carrying something they have never learnt how to express. Not every strange colleague is strange because they dislike people. Perhaps they have spent their entire life waiting for somebody to say one genuinely kind thing to them. And perhaps this man was the same. Perhaps he was not sitting there thinking, “I want everyone around me to be uncomfortable.” Perhaps this was simply his life. And then I felt guilty for what I had been thinking. Which is rather strange, because nobody had heard me. Nobody had been insulted. Nobody had been humiliated. Nobody had even known what was going through my head. It was just a monologue happening inside my own brain. And yet I still felt as though I had done something wrong. Eventually, I reached my stop and got off the bus. I came home, and for some reason, the whole thing stayed with me. It is such a small incident. A man on a bus. An unpleasant smell. A few changes of seats. A few rather horrible thoughts that nobody ever heard. And yet somehow it made me think about human nature. Perhaps we are not quite as simple as the labels we give ourselves. Perhaps having an ugly thought does not necessarily make you an ugly person. Perhaps having empathy does not mean you are incapable of disgust, irritation or cruelty. Perhaps being human means that all of these things can exist in the same mind at the same time. You can be disgusted by someone and still wonder what happened to them. You can judge someone for a moment and then realise that you know absolutely nothing about their circumstances.
