In Memory of Professor Sumit Sarkar (1939–2026): A Titan of Modern Indian History
The academic world grieves the loss of Professor Sumit Sarkar, a pioneering scholar whose intellectual rigour and commitment to truth permanently enriched the study of modern India. Carrying forward a rich intellectual lineage as the son of Susobhan Sarkar, he dedicated 30 years to guiding students at Delhi University.
Professor Sarkar possessed a rare gift: the ability to look beyond elite narratives and reveal the vibrant, complex history of everyday people. His monumental works gave voice to workers, peasants, lower castes, and women, reframing how we understand Indian nationalism and colonial rule.
Never one to settle for dogmatism, he approached his own Marxist foundations with critical nuance, famously challenging the evolution of Subaltern Studies when he felt it strayed from historical reality. Above all, he stood as a resolute champion for secular history, grounded strictly in uncompromising evidence.
His legacy lives on not only in the pages of his brilliant books, but in the minds of the countless scholars he inspired. The Indian History Congress stands alongside his family, friends, and former students in mourning a giant of Indian historiography.

स्वतंत्रता दिवस समारोह : सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम
महाविद्यालय के छात्र-छात्राओं को सूचित किया जाता है कि स्वतंत्रता दिवस समारोह के अवसर पर नृत्य, एकल एवं समूह गायन, हिंदी एवं अंग्रेजी भाषण, समूह नृत्य, नाट्य प्रस्तुति तथा अन्य देशभक्ति आधारित सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम आयोजित किए जाएंगे। इच्छुक छात्र-छात्राएँ प्रतिभागिता हेतु अपना नाम एवं कक्षा इतिहास विभाग में दर्ज कराएँ।
सभी प्रतिभागियों के लिए दिनांक 14 अगस्त 2026 को प्रातः 10:00 बजे से सेमिनार हॉल में रिहर्सल आयोजित होगी। रिहर्सल में उपस्थित होना अनिवार्य है। जो प्रतिभागी रिहर्सल में उपस्थित नहीं होगा, उसे स्वतंत्रता दिवस के दिन प्रस्तुति का अवसर नहीं दिया जाएगा।
