The red absinthe turned out more pink than red
I only made a small 250ml bottle since i dont have a lot of hibiscus and rose
So i will probably make mostly green absinthe but a bit of red as well since i have some rose leaves from my garden
For the coloring, traditionally theres just the green and white absinthes, green being the same as white with a few herbs added after distillation to give a bit of color and maybe some flavor
Though there apparently was one historic brand of absinthe that used red coloring
Now while i did get 80g of wormwood, i previously harvested a lot and dried that but that turned out to be a mere 30g so i went and harvested a bit more from my wormwood plants and that of course was much heavier due to being fresh and filled with moisture
So i opted to add 10g more fresh wormwood and im hoping that because its fresh the flavor will be much more intense so itll work out
This is using the following recipe i put together
absinthe
1.5L 85% neutral spirit
maceration
80g wormwood
90g anise
70g fennel
7g angelica root
6g coriander
1.5g caraway
6g star anise
other possible herbs:
3g majoram
4g mint
coloring
green:
2g hyssop
2g lemon balm / melissa
2g mint
(2g spinach if you want extra greeness)
red:
30g hibiscus or rose
7g tarragon (estragon)
5g orange zest (perhaps a little more, to taste)
