My friend was selling a phone and the buyer took it under the pretext of calling someone else. The buyer saved his own number as "BOA" on the phone. He then returned the device and sent an SMS that looked exactly like a Bank of Abyssinia confirmation message from the saved number. Unless you click on the profile and check the actual number, the message appears to be sent by BOA. To make it convincing, the scammer even checked the account's previous balance and calculated the new balance to include in the fake SMS confirmation.
My friend was more observant and noticed the discrepancy. He retrieved the phone and gave the buyer a well-deserved lesson. 🥊🥋
