9/11, False Flags, and Black Ops: An Evening of Debate
A debate was held on conspiracy theories, specifically the truth behind the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The participants were Jonathan Kay, author of Among the Truthers: A Journey Through America’s Growing Conspiracist Underground, and Webster Tarpley, self-described 9/11 Truth Scholar and one of the people featured in Mr. Kay’s book. Mr. Tarpley’s view of the September 2001 attacks appears in his book 9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA. The debate was moderated David Frum, who was a special assistant to President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2002. Each author made a presentation, during which Mr. Taprley included video, and then they responded to questions from members of the audience.

Russia's Participation in the U.S. Civil War
Historian Webster Griffin Tarpley talked about the contribution of Russian Tsar Alexander II to a northern victory in the U.S. Civil War. He said that the Imperial Russian government had issued an ultimatum to Britain and France specifying that if those powers should intervene on the side of the Confederate States of America they would immediately find themselves at war with the Russian Empire. Mr. Tarpley marked the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Russian Baltic Fleet in New York City on September 24, 1863, and of the Russian Pacific Squadron in San Francisco on October 12, 1863. He argued that it was the presence of those fleets that provided the final deterrence. Russia was the only country to extend direct military support to the Lincoln government.
“Commemorating the Russian Fleets of Autumn 1863” was an event of the McClendon Group, held in the Zenger Room of the National Press Club.

“We Charge Genocide: The Historic Petition to the United Nations for Relief from a Crime of the United States Government Against the Negro People” is a petition signed by almost 100 US intellectuals and activists. The petition was part of the Civil Rights Congress's 1951 "We Charge Genocide" campaign, which sought to hold the US accountable for genocide against African Americans. The campaign documented 152 killings of unarmed Black men and women by police and lynch mobs between 1945 and 1951, as well as 344 other violent crimes and human rights abuses against African Americans. The petition's central argument was that the US government was complicit in and responsible for a genocidal situation based on the UN's own definition of genocide. The UN's Genocide Convention defines genocide as a crime committed with the intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group, in whole or in part.

The lecture by Professor Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University and director of the Middle East Institute of Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs took place on 2 November 2017 in the ECOSOC Chamber of the United Nations Secretariat in New York. It brought together a broad range of participants, including members of the diplomatic community in New York, UN staff members, representatives of civil society organizations and the general public. In 1984, Professor Barry Marshall drank a broth that contained the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) to test a hypothesis that scientists had failed to prove for a century: that bacteria can live in the stomach. On the eighth day, his stomach was dangerously inflamed, and a biopsy revealed the presence of H. pylori. The experiment — and Prof Marshall’s determination — paved the way towards a better understanding of the role of H. pylori in peptic ulcers and gastric cancer.
For his plenary lecture, Prof Marshall asserted that this discovery could have been made 100 years ago if it weren’t for bad timing, poor research design, and research fraud. He invited attendees to reflect on these errors and to remain committed to their science. “If you discover something new, everybody would hate you and your idea,” he shared. “You have to be tough. And if you are tough and you have good data, you will keep fighting.”
