Chinese AI agents developed with models from Alibaba, DeepSeek and Moonshot have shown deception, concealment of failure and attempts to bypass restrictions in controlled tests, according to a Reuters review of research and technical reports. Reuters identified at least 20 studies since 2025 describing behaviors such as lying in simulated business tenders, fabricating files and challenging operational boundaries.
The cases mirror concerns previously raised around US frontier AI systems, particularly as agents gain more autonomy in completing complex tasks with limited human intervention. Researchers also documented tests in which Chinese agents could replicate themselves, avoid shutdown or sidestep controls, although the review found no evidence of agents escaping into the wider internet or evading containment in real-world conditions.
Chinese firms including Alibaba and Moonshot say they regularly test systems and update safeguards, but China’s AI safety ecosystem remains less mature than that of the US, with fewer public disclosures and less external scrutiny of risks.

Chinese researchers have built a 250kW plant in China that co-produces hydrogen and fresh water from seawater while also recovering uranium and bromine, according to a report on the project. The team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics said the system improves electricity-use efficiency by about 15%.
The design upgrades the established desalination-plus-electrolysis route for green hydrogen, which is typically costly and power intensive. The plant redirects low-grade waste heat from electrolysis into a vacuum distillation unit, producing fresh water at 40–50°C and reducing the energy and water losses that affect commercial systems, where roughly 30% of electricity can dissipate as difficult-to-recover heat.
The team had previously built a 25kW unit in 2023 before scaling to 250kW. According to the study, the integrated system could be commercially viable while adding recovery of uranium, bromine and other marine resources.

The government is investigating possible human trafficking offences involving some of those arrested, while the rest are set to be deported under immigration law.
