🇨🇳 Anhui Finds Major Copper-Gold Deposit
China’s Ministry of Natural Resources said exploration in the Chating area of Xuancheng, Anhui, has made a major breakthrough, with authorities reporting a large copper-gold deposit that could form a new major resource base in eastern China. Initial estimates indicate copper potential exceeding the scale of several large copper mines and gold potential exceeding more than 10 large gold mines; it is described as the largest porphyry copper-gold deposit yet identified in the middle-lower Yangtze region.
The find is significant for China’s supply of strategic metals used in solar, wind, energy storage, electric vehicles, grid construction, electronics, new materials, and reserve assets. The report said the deposit could improve national resource security and help address copper and gold shortages in East China, while supporting smelting and processing industries closer to the Yangtze River Delta.
Authorities said deeper ore bodies have not yet been fully delineated, leaving room for higher resource estimates. Associated silver and sulfur may also be recoverable, with the site expected to develop into an ultra-large copper-gold production base in East China.

| 2 | 🇺🇸🇹🇼 Taiwan Investment Pledge Nears
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Taiwan will next week announce additional investment of up to $30 billion in the United States. He said the pledge would add roughly $20 billion-$30 billion, as the Trump administration considers a new round of semiconductor tariffs tied to domestic production.
Lutnick said companies that build plants in the US could receive tariff relief, while imports from producers without US manufacturing could face higher duties. He also said about $1.2 trillion has already been committed to US semiconductor capacity, including by TSMC and Micron, while an earlier US-Taiwan trade agreement included around $500 billion in investment and credit guarantees for US high-tech manufacturing.
Taiwan Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin said Taipei had identified about 20 semiconductor and AI server firms with roughly $35 billion in planned or ongoing US investment, rising to $55 billion after an additional $20 billion was mapped out over the past three months, excluding TSMC. A Taiwanese media report, citing an unnamed finance official, said Lutnick may have misspoken and referred to these existing figures rather than a separate new pledge.

| 3 | 🇰🇷 Seoul picks cyber AI consortium
South Korea’s science ministry selected a consortium led by Naver Cloud for a government project to develop a sovereign AI foundation model for cybersecurity, the ministry said on Sept. 3. The group, which beat a rival consortium led by SK Telecom, includes 32 companies and institutions such as LG CNS, LG Uplus, KEPCO KDN, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and the Financial Security Institute.
The project is designed to build a cybersecurity model tailored to South Korea’s security environment as AI-driven cyber risks expand. The government will provide up to 256 Nvidia B200 GPUs over 10 months, while the consortium plans to add 4,000 B200 GPUs from Naver Cloud and 256 H200 GPUs from LG to train two models based on HyperCLOVA X and EXAONE.
The models will be trained on about 830 TB of data and tested across seven sectors, including energy, finance, telecommunications, semiconductors, defense and aerospace. The ministry plans to sign a contract with the consortium later this month.

The United States is considering frigate designs from South Korea, Japan and Turkey for a new warship class, according to a report by USNI News. The White House and the U.S. Navy are reportedly weighing the Chungnam-class, an export version of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' FFM Mogami-class, and the Istanbul-class for a competition that may include building up to two ships in foreign shipyards before shifting production to U.S. yards.
The reported plan would break with more than a century of U.S. domestic naval construction. It follows a national security memorandum signed last month by President Donald Trump allowing foreign shipbuilders to build up to two ships in their home yards for U.S. delivery, while the Navy studies international options for combatants and support vessels as part of a broader effort to rebuild U.S. naval capacity and shipbuilding.
The Navy's assessment is due on Nov. 12, 2026. The move also aligns with expanding U.S.-South Korea shipbuilding cooperation, after Seoul pledged $150 billion for the U.S. shipbuilding sector under last year's bilateral trade and investment deal.

Several Western diplomats attended the hearing. A conviction in this case is likely to prolong Wong’s imprisonment beyond his current term.

China, Russia, and Mongolia will hold the second “Border Cooperation-2026” joint border exercise in early September, according to a Chinese defense ministry statement issued on September 1. Police in Gwangju said four Uzbek men were apprehended in South Korea over alleged violations of counter-terrorism financing law tied to support for a Syria-based militant group. According to police findings, the main suspect allegedly sent 6.3 million won in cryptocurrency to KTJ and used funds received from the group to buy 11 used cars and two excavators worth 170 million won for shipment to Syria.
KTJ was designated a terrorist organization by the United Nations in 2022 and is affiliated with al-Qaeda. Investigators said the main suspect had no official ties to the group but began supporting it after contact from his younger brother, who is allegedly a member, while the three other Uzbek nationals are accused of assisting with sourcing used vehicles.
The main suspect was arrested in April, one month after an Interpol red notice was issued, and has been indicted in detention. Police said he operated a used-car export company under another Uzbek national's name.
