March 9, 1911: White firemen and engineers for the railroad went on strike in Somerset, KY to oppose the hiring of blacks. The railroads hired black strikebreakers to replace White railworkers, but armed Whites in surrounding towns stopped the freight trains carrying blacks from entering Somerset. 🚂🪧⚡ "White firemen on the various lines went on strike after the railroad company refused to honor their demand for all Negro firemen to be fired within 90 days.
