Repost from Words of the Buddha
“Mendicants, in some past lives the Realized One was reborn as a human being. ... Due to performing those deeds he was reborn in a heavenly realm. When he came back to this place he obtained this mark: he is golden colored; his skin shines like lustrous gold.
On this it is said:
“Fixated on good will, he gave gifts. In an earlier life he poured forth cloth fine and soft to touch, like a god pouring rain on this broad earth.
So doing he passed from here to heaven, where he enjoyed the fruits of deeds well done. Here he wins a figure shining like honey-yellow gold, like Indra, the finest of gods.
If that man stays in the house, not wishing to go forth, he conquers and rules this vast, broad earth. He obtains abundant excellent cloth, so fine and soft to touch.
He receives robes, cloth, and the finest garments. if he chooses the life gone forth. For he still partakes of past deed’s fruit; what’s been done is never lost.”

DEATH SEIZES THE DOTING MAN
15. The doting man with mind set on children and herds, death seizes and carries away, as a great flood (sweeps away) a slumbering village. 287.
Story
A young mother named Kisà Gotami, lost her only child. As she had never come across an instance of death she carried the corpse on her hip believing the child to be ill and searching for a remedy. A wise man directed her to the Buddha who advised her to collect some mustard seed from a household where none had died. She got mustard but found no household where none had died. The Truth dawned upon her. When she returned, the Buddha preached the Dhamma to her. She became a nun. One day she observed the flickering of a lamp and reflected on the impermanence of life. The Buddha projected His image before her and uttered this stanza comparing life to a flickering lamp.

"Monks, there are these five benefits of associating with a good person, keeping their company, and attending on them. What five? One becomes faithful, virtuous, learned, generous, and wise. These, monks, are the five benefits of associating with a good person."

| 9 | Form [Feeling, Perception, Choices, Consciousness] is not-self. For if form were self, it wouldn’t lead to affliction. And you could compel form: ‘May my form be like this! May it not be like that!’ But because form is not-self, it leads to affliction. And you can’t compel form: ‘May my form be like this! May it not be like that!’
What do you think? Is form [feeling, perception, choices, consciousness] permanent or impermanent?”
“Impermanent”
“But if it’s impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?”
“Suffering”
“But if it’s impermanent, suffering, and perishable, is it fit to be regarded thus: ‘This is mine, I am this, this is my self’?”
“No”
“So you should truly see any kind of form [feeling, perception, choices, consciousness ] with right understanding: ‘This is not mine, I am not this, this is not my self.’
Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they’re freed...Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed.

THE IGNORANT REALIZE NOT THE FEAR OF DEATH
14. Here will I live in the rainy season, here in the autumn and in the summer: thus muses the fool. He realizes not the danger (of death). 286.
Story
A merchant with his retinue halted by a river. There was heavy rain and he thought of selling his goods and spending the various seasons there. The Buddha perceived that the man would die in seven days. The Venerable ânanda called on the merchant and informed him of his impending death. He was filled with remorse and, inviting the Buddha and the Sangha, gave them alms. The Buddha advised him to meditate on death. He did so and later attained the first state of Sainthood and passed away as predicted.

Peace From Within
By Ajahn Kalyano (Sr)
On the occasion of my 60th birthday, I received some requests from the monastic Sangha and the lay supporters of Buddha Bodhivana Monastery who wished to know more about my life and practice as a monk. In response, it seems like a good idea to commit some of my various recollections to paper before they become lost through the passage of time. This book includes some of my personal recollections and insights from my life in the robes, rather than providing lengthy explanations of the Buddha’s teachings. The language used is simple and without too much reference to many of the Pali technical terms that we use daily as we talk about the Buddha’s teachings.

DEVELOP THE PATH OF PEACE
13. Cut off your affection, as though it were an autumn lily, with the hand. Cultivate the very path of peace. Nibbàna has been expounded by the Auspicious One. 285.
Story
A young monk was meditating on the impurities of the body but with no effect. The Buddha, perceiving his disposition, gave him a lotus as a focus for mental concentration. The monk succeeded in his meditation, gained the jhànas and developing his faculties as advised by the Buddha, later attained Arahantship.
