It is agreed by many scholars that junk food consumption is now widespread and it has constantly been damaging people’s health. There is, however, a view that education can help mitigate the issue while many others,including me, believe that education does not help overcome junk food related problems. On the one hand, education is a tool that might raise public awareness on junk food’s shortcomings and therefore help people avoid possible adverse outcomes associated with it. For one, school curriculum could include classes dedicated to fostering skills on how to follow a proper diet. As simple as teaching students on how to count daily carbohydrates or what type of food they could include in their meals can have an immediate result so that they do not under or over consume it; is one example those curriculum could serve advantageous. Apart from schools, internet shows, commercials breaks on TV or an educational post from a celebrity blogger might also be used to effectively stress drawbacks of junk food so people can set diets that work best for their health. On the other hand, there are also reasons why education might pale into insignificance in combating against presence of junk food as a typical meal. One advantage of junk food (as well as why it is preferred over other types of food) is its cost and time effectiveness that make this particular food alluring. Increased pace of life both in education and in a workplace urges people to either skip their meals or have a quick go at them. Junk food, in this regard, is quick to be cooked and can be consumed while on a trip on a bus or in a train standing still, for instance. Additionally, There are also people who might consume a large portions of junk owing to the fact it is, by and large, less expensive than food in a restaurant or at home. Consumers consciously opt for junk food even when they acknowledge its apparent drawbacks since they now can cut down on a budget and be able to afford ever-increasing utility bills or save up for university tuition fee, for instance, provided they eat cheap unhealthy food every now and then, instead of having an expensive one. In conclusion, education can be used both at schools and in many other social platforms to reduce consumption and in the same manner negative effects of junk food. However, in my opinion, education loses its importance when people knowingly choose to eat junk food to save up on time and money.

July 15, real exam question: Scientists agree that many people eat too much junk food and it is damaging their health. Some people think that this problem can be solved by educating people, while others believe that education will not work. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
