Portrait of Admiral of the Fleet David Richard Beatty
(1871-1936)
Sir David Beatty was born in Howbeck, Cheshire on 17 January 1871, and entered the Royal Navy at the age of 13, serving with distinction in Sudan from 1896-98 and in China during the Boxer Rising of 1900; even at this early stage Beatty marked himself out as a bold, aggressive officer, succeeding in becoming the youngest officer for a century to achieve flag rank at the age of 39, the last such being Lord Nelson.
He was made Rear Admiral in 1910 and served as Winston Churchill's Naval Secretary from 1911-13, after which he was appointed Commander of the Grand Fleet's Battlecruiser Squadron in 1913, a position he held at the outbreak of war in August 1914. Intended as a swift-moving reconnoitring force, the squadron's role was to locate enemy forces and to subsequently hold them at bay until the arrival of the main force.
Raymond IV is sometimes known as Raymond of Saint-Gilles, was Count of Toulouse, Marquis of Provence, and one of the leaders of the First Crusade. He succeeded his brother William IV as Count of Toulouse in 1088.
According to an Armenian source, he had lost an eye on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem before the First Crusade. He fought against the Moors in Spain before 1096, and he was th first to join the crusade after Pope Urban II's sermon at the Council of Clermont.
He was present at the siege of Nicaea and the Battle of Dorylaeum , but his first major role came in October of 1097 at the siege of Antioch. The crusaders heard a rumour that Antioch had been deserted by the Seljuk Turks, so Raymond sent his army ahead to occupy it, offending Bohemund of Taranto who wanted the city for himself. The city was, however, still occupied, and was taken by the crusaders in June of 1098. Raymond took the palatium cassiani and the tower over the Bridge Gate. He was ill during the second siege of Antioch by Kerbogha.
Godfrey de bouillon
1100
Godfrey of Bouillon, French Godefroi de Bouillon, (born c. 1060—died July 18, 1100, kingdom of Jerusalem duke of Lower Lorraine (as Godfrey IV; 1089–1100) and a leader of the First Crusade, who became the first Latin ruler in Palestine after the capture of Jerusalem from the Muslims in July 1099.
Godfrey, with his brothers Eustace and Baldwin, joined the First Crusade in 1096. When Raymond of Toulouse declined to become king of Jerusalem, Godfrey accepted the crown but refused the title of king and was called instead Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri (Defender of the Holy Sepulchre).
Godfrey arranged truces with the Muslim maritime cities of Ascalon, Caesarea, and Acre and successfully beat off an Egyptian attack. Godfrey also acknowledged himself as a vassal of Daimbert, patriarch of Jerusalem, thus laying the foundation for future struggles between lay and ecclesiastical figures who sought to control the kingdom. On his death he was succeeded by his brother Baldwin I.
Set honor in one eye and death in th' other, and I will look on both indifferently. I love then name of honor more than I fear death.
