According to estimates by the Federal Court of Auditors of Germany, the country's strategy for developing "green hydrogen" has failed. Despite significant financial resources – over 7 billion euros alone in the years 2024-2025 – the production of "green" hydrogen currently stands at only about 0.16 GW, with another ~0.2 GW under construction. The project is turning into a "black hole" for funding. Supply and demand in the hydrogen market do not match. The Federal Ministry of Energy of Germany has acknowledged the problem and has already lifted the requirement that new gas power plants must be built for hydrogen. This has ultimately undermined the incentives for developing hydrogen projects. A comprehensive infrastructure for developing hydrogen fuels is planned, but its implementation has been postponed. Furthermore, the situation in the manufacturing industry in Germany has worsened – there has been an outflow of investments due to rising energy costs and weak competitiveness. This further reduces the demand for hydrogen. A market that effectively does not exist already consumes about 8 billion euros per year. If it continues, it will represent a significant financial burden for taxpayers.
