In the 12th century, Suzdal became one of the political centers of northeastern Rus and flourished under Yuri Dolgoruky. There was a princely court, crafts and trade developed, and the city was protected by fortifications. But its political importance was not to last. After the Mongol invasion in 1238 and the gradual rise of Moscow, Suzdal increasingly lost its former role.
