Anne Carson Wins the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature
Canadian poet, essayist, translator and classicist Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.
The Swedish Academy honoured Carson “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”
Carson is widely known for writing that crosses conventional literary boundaries, bringing together poetry, essays, translation, criticism and classical literature.
Her engagement with ancient Greek literature and mythology has shaped some of her best-known works, often transforming classical material into distinctly contemporary forms.
Among her notable books are Autobiography of Red, Nox and Float.
Her work is particularly recognised for experimenting with form and combining scholarship with poetry, narrative and visual elements.

How Much Do You Know About the Nobel Prize?
The Nobel Prize traces its origins to Swedish inventor and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel, who stipulated in his will that most of his fortune should fund prizes for those who had conferred the “greatest benefit to humankind.”
Nobel is best known for developing dynamite, patented in 1867, and held 355 patents during his lifetime.
Since the first prizes were awarded in 1901, the Nobel Prizes and the Economic Sciences prize were awarded 633 times through 2025, according to official Nobel Prize statistics.
The history also includes several remarkable milestones: Marie Curie remains the only woman to have received Nobel Prizes twice, while Rabindranath Tagore became the first Asian Nobel laureate when he received the Literature Prize in 1913.
One notable omission remains Mahatma Gandhi.
He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times — 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and 1948 — but never received it.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026: Henri Kagan & Kenso Soai Win for Breakthrough Work in Asymmetric Synthesis 🧪🏅
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai “for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.”
Their research addresses a fundamental question in chemistry: how can a very small imbalance between mirror-image molecules become strongly amplified?
Kagan’s work helped establish the importance of non-linear effects in asymmetric catalysis, while Soai demonstrated a remarkable form of asymmetric autocatalysis, in which a chiral product can promote its own formation and amplify a tiny initial imbalance.
This research has significantly advanced scientists’ understanding of chirality — the property that makes some molecules exist in left- and right-handed forms.
Chirality is especially important in pharmaceuticals, biological molecules and modern chemical synthesis.

More than 90% of adults worldwide have been infected with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), one of the most common human viruses. But an important fact often gets lost: most people infected with EBV never develop cancer.
EBV, also known as Human Herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), usually spreads through saliva and remains dormant in the body after infection.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO’s cancer research agency, classifies EBV as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there is sufficient evidence that it can cause cancer in humans.
EBV has established links with cancers including:
• Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
• Burkitt lymphoma
• Hodgkin lymphoma
• Certain gastric (stomach) cancers

Nobel Prize in Physics 2026
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.”
Francis Halzen realised that ice at the South Pole could be used to track particles known as neutrinos. His vision and scientific leadership have been fundamental for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory – a cubic kilometre of ice that is equipped with light sensors. Using IceCube, researchers can capture neutrinos from extremely energy-rich processes in the distant universe.
Neutrinos are everywhere, but they do not make themselves known. They pass all the way through the Earth and through our bodies without us noticing. Very rarely, a single neutrino will interact with an atomic nucleus, which makes it possible for someone with the right equipment to discover them.

Women report suffering more pain than men, a major new global study has found.
That was true for all types of pain the researchers measured, and comes amid continuing concern about the gender pain gap, which means women are less likely to be prescribed the pain relief they need.
Researchers from all over the world carried out “one of the largest harmonisation efforts in pain epidemiology to date”. Data was collected from more than 6 million people from 118 countries from 1990 to 2025, and included people from aged five years to more than 100.
रोशनी से ब्रेन सेल्स को कंट्रोल करने वाली तकनीक: Optogenetics 🧠💡

2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine: How Light Can Control Brain Cells 🧠💡
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded jointly to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.
Optogenetics gives researchers a remarkable ability: using light to switch the activity of selected nerve cells on or off. This allows scientists to investigate which neural circuits are responsible for particular functions and behaviours.
Using optogenetics, researchers have studied circuits involved in pain, thirst, food consumption, reward, attention and social behaviour.
Scientists have also identified nerve cells involved in processes ranging from the circadian rhythm and fever to communication between the brain and other parts of the body.
The technique is helping researchers better understand psychiatric and neurological conditions including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

India’s UNESCO Tentative List Gets 5 New Entries
India’s heritage footprint has expanded further, with five new sites/proposals added to UNESCO’s Tentative List, taking the country’s total to 78.
The new entries include:
📍 Bagh Cave Paintings — Buddhist rock-cut caves known for remarkable murals
📍 Udaigiri Caves — Gupta-era sacred complex with 20 caves, sculptures and inscriptions
📍 Group of Temples of the Chambal Valley — Early medieval temples representing the evolution of Nagara-style architecture
📍 Ginnorgarh Fort — An important centre of the Gond kingdom
📍 Sites of Satyagraha — A transnational India–South Africa proposal linked to Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance
But what does being on the Tentative List actually mean?
It is essentially an inventory of properties a country may consider nominating for UNESCO World Heritage status. Inclusion does not automatically make a site a World Heritage Site.
