In Uzbekistan, for instance, many school leavers immediately enter the job market — taking roles in hospitality, retail, or local organisations — in order to begin earning an income as soon as possible. While these benefits are real, they tend to be short-term in nature and do not outweigh the long-term costs of forgoing higher education.
On the other hand, attending university equips graduates with specialised knowledge and qualifications that are simply unattainable through early employment alone. Universities are specifically designed to provide students with both the theoretical foundations and practical skills required in their chosen field — a factor of particular importance in professions such as medicine and law, where practitioners must meet rigorous academic and regulatory standards before being licensed to practise. Beyond technical expertise, universities also offer invaluable networking opportunities; by engaging in lectures, seminars, and collaborative projects, students forge meaningful connections with ambitious peers, experienced academics, and industry professionals alike. These relationships, cultivated over years of shared intellectual endeavour, often prove instrumental in advancing one's career long after graduation. Research consistently indicates that university graduates earn significantly more over their lifetime than those who enter the workforce directly after school, underscoring the long-term value of higher education. Clearly, the depth of knowledge and professional connections gained at university represent advantages that far outweigh the short-term financial appeal of bypassing higher education altogether.
