Russia’s ruble-linked A7A5 stablecoin has processed nearly $140 billion in turnover since its launch, according to Promsvyazbank chairman Pyotr Fradkov. A7A5 is pegged 1:1 to the Russian ruble and operates through the A7 cross-border payment system, created after Western sanctions cut most Russian banks off from SWIFT. Fradkov says A7A5 has become the world’s largest non-dollar stablecoin, with around $570 million in capitalization. The bigger ambition goes beyond Russia. A7 wants to expand its payment infrastructure into international trade, potentially giving Russian companies an alternative channel for cross-border transactions. The EU has already sanctioned A7A5 as an independent infrastructure project. The message is becoming clear: Sanctions are not only pushing Russia to build alternatives — they are accelerating the emergence of competing payment ecosystems.
