💡A light-dependent resistor (LDR), also known as a photoresistor, is an electronic component that exhibits a change in resistance when exposed to light. The resistance of an LDR decreases as the intensity of light increases and increases as the intensity of light decreases. @theelectricalengineering ➡LDRs are made of a semiconductor material, such as cadmium sulfide, that is sensitive to light. When light falls on the surface of the semiconductor, the photons in the light excite electrons in the material, which causes the resistance of the material to decrease. Conversely, when there is little or no light, the electrons in the material are not excited, and the resistance of the material is high. ➡LDRs are often used in light-sensing applications, such as automatic streetlights, light meters, and camera exposure controls. In an automatic streetlight, for example, an LDR can be used to detect the ambient light level and switch the streetlight on when it gets dark and switch it off when it gets light. ➡LDRs can also be used in conjunction with other electronic components, such as transistors or operational amplifiers, to create more complex circuits.
