How does bad AQI affect our health? When AQI is bad, pollutants like PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ozone present in the air penetrate deep into our lungs. These particles spread throughout the body via the bloodstream and can cause various health problems, from immediate to long-term. Continuous exposure reduces lung capacity and increases the risk of chronic diseases. Understand this with the graphic below- What are PM2.5 and PM10, and how do they harm our health? PM (Particulate Matter) refers to extremely fine particles and liquid droplets present in the air. They are divided into two categories based on their size. — PM10: These are particles 10 microns or smaller, formed from dust, soil, smoke, and vehicle/factory emissions. They can reach the nose and throat, triggering allergies, cough, respiratory irritation, and asthma. — PM2.5: These are particles 2.5 microns or even smaller. They are about 30 times smaller than a human hair. So tiny that they can easily reach the lungs and blood. PM2.5 is considered more dangerous because the body cannot filter it. Long-term exposure increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, COPD, cancer, brain inflammation, and risks in pregnant women. These particles accumulate in the lungs, causing inflammation and damaging blood vessels. This makes the heart work harder.
