Day’s Moment
Something caught my attention today on campus: a delivery guy — an expat who works here away from his family — on his way back to his motorbike was rewatching the video of his young toddler giggling.
What I saw on his face was nothing but the true definition of happiness. Long day, hard work, but a great energy injected by his kid’s video!
We are happy in the moments! Enjoy them. Don’t pursue something abstract, something future…

| 2 | Life at a Liberal Arts College
Liberal Arts (LA henceforth) College is more than just a type of curriculum that offers interdisciplinary, student-centered pursuits.
However, it is also reflected in many different dimensions of life at a residential college. Engineering and Social Science students discussing philosophy, music, arts, and many other seemingly irrelevant (to their major) topics over the dinner; formulating day-to-day opinions on the worldly affairs; recognizing no boundaries/censorship on the topics being discussed/questioned; and many more are a liberal arts college.
From outside, it looks like a bunch of idiots who do not seem to understand that their inquiries/arguments are of no practical use.
Yet, internally, it is a think tank that prepares not scientists, bankers, politicians, engineers, or biologists but critical thinkers who have developed their own (not necessarily right or wrong) opinions on many things in life.

| 8 | Hit the Gym Alone
No, that’s not a productivity tip. This is not about you yapping too much with your gym buddy — even though that is actually the case.
The gym serves as an only escape from the external world to me. It is one of the few places where I am alone. Physically, but also more importantly mentally: I have no tangible mental task for me to do while running a routine workout plan.
This is nothing but an opportunity to run long, uninterrupted (except for people asking you if you are done using a piece of equipment) conversations in your head.
One conversation seamlessly gives way to another until you mentally walk into many different streets of the world: your instant life, future, philosophy, business, family, and etc.
Then you notice that it is not an escape from the external world but a concentrated look at it from a spectator’s point.
Hitting the gym, biking, having a stroll, cooking, or doing anything mentally offloading alone once in a while can definitely help clear your thoughts and improve your mental state.

Jadidchilik harakati — modern o’zbek jamiyatining muhim tarixiy hodisalaridan — juda ham ko’p iste’dodlarni kashf etdi. Va har bir jadid o’zidan bizga qaysidir jabhada katta meros qoldirdi.
Ammo, ular orasida Abdulla Qodiriy o’zining o’zgarish yoqqasida turgan o’zbek jamiyatiga kritik qarashi va uni bir roman vositasida xalqga yetqazishi bilan ajralib turadi.

| 18 | A Step Further
If we continue along this thread of logic, we can deduce that a human being in his own relationship with himself does not fully open up either. It becomes manifest in many different ways: letting things go, not admitting his faults, etc. After all, the hardest conversations are the ones that one has with himself.
So can we claim that he should not control/subject himself because he does not know himself?
Or am I overthinking? I am. | 2 138 |
| 19 | Yana Millga qaytamiz…
J.S. Mill — mashhur ingliz faylasufi — o’zining “Ayollarning bo’ysundirilishi” kitobida bir qiziq, muhokamalarga sabab bo’ladigan fikrni oldinga suradi. Uning yozishicha, erkaklar ayollarning fikrlashi, tabiyati, va ularga nima yaxshi va nima yomon ekanligini bilmaydi, chunki erkaklar tomonidan boshqariladigan dunyoda ayol o’ziga eng yaqin bo’lgan erkakga ham — ya’ni, eriga — o’zining istak-xoxishlarini boricha ifoda etmaydi. Nimaga?
Chunki to’g’ridan to’g’ri shu erkakka ijtimoiy, moliyaviy, va hayotiy qaramligi uchun unga yoqmagan fikr, istak, va tabiat jazolanilishini biladi va faqat eri qabul qila oladigan jihatlarni unga ko’rsatadi. Qisqasi, er o’ziga eng yaqin bo’lgan ayolni to’liq kashf etaolmagandan keyin, qanday qilib boshqa ayollar yoki umuman ayol tabiatini bilaman deb iddao qilishi mumkin?
Bu fikr qanchalik to’g’ri yoki unday emasligi haligacha bahsli bo’lsada, meni o’ylashimcha bu fikrni har qanday ikkita inson yoki birlik o’rtasidagi munosabatlarga qo’llash mumkin. Bir inson ikkinchisidan manfaatdor bo’lgan vaziyatlarda — ishchi va ish beruvchi, ota va farzand, o’qituvchi va o’quvchi — u o’zining barcha qirralarini ochmaydi va ocha olmaydi chunki to’g’ridan to’g’ri bu ish uning manfaatlariga putur yetqazishi mumkin (otaning jazosi, o’qishdan haydalish va h.k). Demak, ota o’zining farzandini, o’qituvchi o’z o’quvchisini, ish beruvchi esa o’z ishchisining tabiatini tushunmaydi.
Unday bo’lsa, hech kim hech kimni tushunmaydi va bir kishi ikkinchisi ustidan boshqaruv huquqiga hech qanday kontekstda ega emas degan fikr paydo bo’lmaydimi? Yoki boshqarish huquqi to’liq tushunishni talab qiladimi?
P.S.: bu postni o’zbek tilida yozishdan maqsad ko’proq odamlarning reaksiya va fikrlari menga qiziq.
P.S.S.: bu postdagi fikrlar mening J.S. Millning kitobiga asoslangan shaxsiy mulohazalarimga asoslangan. | 2 296 |
| 20 | On The Great Game (Not about WC 😁)
As some of you might know, I've recently picked up the book "The Great Game" written by Peter Hopkirk based on the files, documents, and notes compiled by British and Russian empires' agents traversing in Central Asian steppes and deserts during the 17-18th centuries.
The book sheds light on mutual fear of two empires' expansion into the region and extensive intelligence gathered by both, while the regional khanates had a little idea about the game being played in their realm. It is an impressive account of the local culture, municipalities, and diplomacy from the western perspective.
Though some local issues in government/mentality seem unfairly exaggerated and regarded in the negative light due to cultural distance, this British picture of Central Asia seems so amusing that I decided to share excerpts as I go (already halfway through and skipped so many fun (sometimes funny) notes - sorry for that).
Let's peruse!
