| 7 | 🚀 FLEX 8k v2 – the dev board that ate my weekend and spat out an arcade machine.
After countless nights of soldering and one glorious tombstone on a 0.5 mm pitch FPGA, iteration two is rock-solid and honestly stupid amounts of fun.
Still running the same PIC18 I know and trust, but now with twice the LEDs and three times the buttons. Perfect for when you need to toggle something just to stay sane.
To mark the occasion I wrote a little hex-to-binary torture device entirely in Verilog inside the FPGA. Zero lines of C, zero interrupts, pure logic gates having a party. #NoSoftware
Gameplay is dead simple:
Random hex digit shows up, you hammer the four buttons for its binary.
Nail it → happy beep + green flash.
Miss it → sad boop + red blink of shame.
Streak counter keeps climbing until you inevitably choke.
Flip the timer switch and it turns into binary speedrunning.
Side note: I still stare at B and D way longer than any grown engineer should.
Reflow gave me my first tombstone ever, but ten minutes with the hot air station and we were back in business.
This thing is now my daily driver for quick experiments and apparently for public binary humiliation.
Schematics, Gerbers, and Verilog get dropped this weekend.

| 8 |  +3⚡ The Second Iteration FLEX 8K Development Board
The second iteration of my FLEX 8K dev board is finally complete and fully functional
It still uses the reliable PIC18 microcontroller from the first version but now includes more LEDs and buttons for extra testing and fun interaction
To make it more interesting I built a small hardware-based game running entirely on the FPGA written in Verilog no software involved
The game displays a hexadecimal digit and the goal is to enter its binary value using the buttons on the board
Each correct input earns a sound feedback and updates your score on the hardware scoreboard
A few minor issues appeared during reflow soldering including my first ever tombstone at a 0.5mm pin pitch but with a bit of rework everything is now running perfectly
Excited to push this project further and explore new FPGA possibilities

This project is built around the Altera FLEX 8000 FPGA continuing my deep dive into this classic yet powerful family of chips
It implements my own take on the Motorola 6845 CRTC 🎛 a custom pixel formatter that outputs 256 colors through a RAMDAC 🎨 and several smart modules for interrupts memory and peripheral control
A built in font ROM lets me switch between two text fonts instantly and fast SRAMs replace dual port RAMs giving me a much larger address space to handle more than just a single screen of text
With the extra logic available inside the FPGA I added hardware scrolling in both text and graphics modes ⚙️
The graphics mode runs at 320x240 upscaled to 640x480 for modern displays one byte per pixel 256 colors and fully customizable palettes

It is a custom FPGA video controller that includes my own version of the Motorola 6845 CRTC 🎛 a pixel formatter that drives a RAMDAC for 256 color output 🎨 fast SRAMs for a larger address space 💾 and hardware scrolling in both text and graphics modes ⚙️
The graphics mode runs at 320x240 and scales up to 640x480 for modern displays a font ROM allows switching between two text fonts on the fly 🖥️
The prototype performs very well even with a bit of background noise typical for early boards this success is the foundation for my next step the production PCB version 🔩
