4. Pattachitra (Odisha & West Bengal) The name comes from the Sanskrit words Patta (canvas/cloth) and Chitra (picture). Religious Link: This art is closely linked to the cult of Lord Jagannath in Puri. It is one of the oldest and most popular art forms of Odisha. Preparation: The "canvas" is prepared by coating cloth with a mixture of chalk and gum made from tamarind seeds. This gives it a leather-like feel. Style: It is known for its heavy borders, sharp lines, and very detailed narrative storytelling. The poses are often influenced by classical Indian dance forms like Odissi.

3. Gond Painting (Madhya Pradesh) Created by the Gond tribe, one of the largest indigenous communities in India. The "Signature" Style: The most striking feature is the use of dots and lines to create a sense of movement and texture. Each artist often has their own unique "signature" pattern of dots or dashes. Belief: The Gonds believe that seeing a good image brings good luck, so they traditionally painted their homes during festivals. Themes: Deeply rooted in nature and folklore. You will often see intricately patterned animals, birds, and mythical stories.

2. Warli Painting (Maharashtra) Originating from the North Sahyadri Range, this is a tribal art form that dates back to the 10th century AD. Visual Style: Extremely minimalist. It uses only three basic shapes: the circle (representing the sun/moon), the triangle (mountains/conical trees), and the square (sacred enclosure or land). Colors: Traditionally uses only white pigment (made from rice paste and water with gum) against a red ochre or mud background. Themes: Unlike Madhubani, it rarely depicts deities. Instead, it focuses on social life: the "Tarpa dance," hunting, fishing, and farming.

1. Madhubani Painting (Bihar) As mentioned, this style is tied to the Ramayana. According to tradition, King Janaka commissioned artists to paint the walls of his kingdom for the wedding of his daughter, Sita, to Lord Rama. Technique: Originally done on mud walls using fingers, twigs, and matchsticks. Today, it is done on cloth, handmade paper, and canvas. Themes: Primarily religious (Krishna, Rama, Shiva, Durga) and nature-based (sun, moon, and the "Tree of Life"). Unique Feature: The "Kachni" (line work) and "Bharni" (solid color filling) styles are distinct. Artists ensure there is no empty space on the canvas, filling gaps with flowers or geometric patterns.
