I read this article in Businessline about bond yield across the world! One of the best articles explaining bond yields and its factors! Do go through it, and it gives the following as the reasons, do note it down for prelims’27 MINDS OF ASPIRANTS | ECONOMY EXPLAINED Why are bond yields staying high? Five reasons 1. Expectations of higher inflation Inflation reduces the purchasing power of future interest payments. Investors therefore demand higher yields to protect their returns. 2. Heavy government borrowing When government spending—including subsidies—requires more borrowing, more bonds enter the market. If demand does not keep pace, bond prices fall and yields rise. 3. Expectations of monetary tightening Investors expect higher interest rates when the central bank tightens monetary policy. Existing bonds with lower fixed interest payments become less attractive, so their prices fall and yields rise. New borrowing must then offer competitive returns. 4. High global yields and uncertainty Higher yields abroad give investors alternative investment opportunities. Global inflation and geopolitical uncertainty can also make investors demand higher returns for holding Indian bonds. 5. Banks’ reluctance to buy long-term bonds Even when banks have surplus money, they may hesitate to buy long-term bonds because further interest-rate increases could reduce those bonds’ market value. Weak demand keeps bond prices under pressure and yields high.
