In 1939, the British killed 750,000 of their own cats and dogs, roughly a quarter of all pets in England. When WWII began, a British government agency advised people to euthanize their pets. And they did it, in huge waves! Some even bought special guns to do it at home. Nobody force them to do it. They did it "out of kindness", because if they hypothetically had to evacuate, the pets might get left behind in abandoned houses, and that would be inhumane. A good microcosm of the British national character. I'm sure they genuinely loved their pets, but they still killed them out of the desire to fulfill their "civic duty". Now apply that same logic to their post-imperial pet projects, remove the "love" part and it will serve as a reminder of the kind of people we are dealing with.

Other members of the so-called "Russian Volunteer Corps" were present at the standoff (they're wearing blue armbands). Despite winning the firefight against Budanov's boys, the SBU agents ended up releasing the RDK commander they had previously detained. The RDK guy the SBU agents kidnapped is Stepan Kaplunov, call sign "Landsknecht". Russian neo-Nazi who left Russia to join Azov back in 2014. He participated in the Bryansk oblast raid in February 2023 when the RDK jumped across the border, shot some civilians and left. He publicly called for the execution of Russian prisoners of war and promised a cash bounty for photos of dead Russian POWs. CNN did a cute little interview with him back in 2022.

It's 10 hours later and the standoff in Kiev between SBU (Ukrainian secret police, internal security agency) and GUR (military intelligence/JSOC) is still hot. There have been multiple firefights throughout the night and morning. At least one dead and two injured are being reported — all GUR. Though there is no official confirmation, it is being widely reported that the background is that the SBU kidnapped Stepan Kalpunov, one of the commanders of the so-called "Russian Volunteer Corps" (a small media/military unit consisting of exiled Russian neo-Nazis), for unknown reasons and GUR attempted to free him (as the RDK is officially a military unit attached to GUR). The SBU tried to downplay the whole thing by issuing a statement claiming that the whole thing is a "joint operation" between SBU and GUR trying to save Kalpunov (only naming him as a "Russian opposition leader") from a Russian assassination attempt. By now, there's tons of police in the area trying to get both sides to calm down and stop shooting.

This tweet is so perfect that it has to be bait, but it's not, it's perfectly sincere. "There's this novel about a loser who thinks he's super special and exempt from all moral laws. He does something evil and stupid and can't even explain why, then starts mystically punishing himself. No idea how that could relate to my life as a Ukrainian"

For a country to actively seek EU membership, it has to be broke and desperate. It doesn't work in any other scenario And -- It was specifically about restarting negotiations. So the majority of Icelanders are against even the idea of talking to Brussels about that. A far cry from the gopniks from Kharkov, who laid their necks on the altar of "joining the EU one day"

Facebook post by Aleksey Chkhalo, Kiev-based military blogger and former AFU General Staff officer. Worth reading in full for the straightforward Ukrainian nationalist opinion, emphasis mine: "The tragedy after the enemy strike on the village of Myla [the big warehouse near Kiev the other day] has once again stirred up a boil of populism: shoot the ones guilty of negligence, crucify them. So, my friends, I'm going to write you an unpleasant truth. Since I am officially no longer a serviceman or a civil servant, I can allow myself a bit of hate, some swearing, and some truth for my civilian friends. Briefly, the main points: everyone will fight; the role of the nominally "civilian" population will be to serve as cover for military production, for the military in general and its activities, and for military depots. In other words, a human shield. That is one of our missions in this war, mine included. So there's no need to whine; you should be proud. I'm sorry to have upset you, my civilian friends. Now, in more detail. War devours enormous quantities of ammunition, whole trainloads, and it has to be produced, stored, and transported. If anyone thinks we have a huge number of depots across the country that meet every safety requirement, sit in forests, and moreover belong to elves who will lease them to you for free, you are mistaken. Anyone who has ever had to site a production facility knows what a pain in the ass it is, and this has to change; the sooner it does, the fewer the casualties. We want a Patriot to protect us, we want interceptors to shoot down the Shaheds flying at us, but we don't want the missiles for that Patriot stored next to us, we don't want the launcher itself standing next to our house, and we'll write a pile of complaints that some enemy agent will see and use to expose the position or the depot. It doesn't work that way. Deal with it. A bit about camouflage: Military production outside a populated area, in the middle of a field, is impossible to camouflage. Workers commute there, vehicles drive there, that's one; and nobody is going to allocate an air-defense system to cover a single depot in a field either. For that reason almost everything, the day-to-day life of the troops, military production, dispersed depots, is better hidden amid civilian life, which has long been done, will go on being done, and will be intensified, because otherwise it means defeat. A bit about efficiency: a city is a city not because people like living in concrete cages, but because a city as a whole is one big factory with a wide range of goods and services, sitting at the intersection of logistics routes, with a concentration of specialists of every kind on top. Placing production in a city makes it more efficient. In wartime, efficiency matters more to us than safety, so production should be in cities and should use their infrastructure. THERE IS NO CIVILIAN POPULATION Modern war is a war of peoples; there are no civilians in it. The Geneva Convention isn't so much outdated as it was never effective in the first place. The Ottawa Convention and the other "peace-loving" conventions are heeded only by those who want peace, while those who want to wage aggressive wars simply use these conventions to disarm their victims. You can't draw a line between what is military and what is not: this one is a soldier, this one makes his rifle, this one drives the guy who makes the rifle in a minibus, this woman feeds the one riding the minibus... this one just pays taxes. Everyone is involved in the life of the state and everyone is involved in the war. Strikes on civilian infrastructure are, unfortunately, an ordinary way of waging war. Here's a quote straight from Wikipedia for you: "The commander of RAF Bomber Command, Arthur Harris, believed that destroying German workers, their family members and their housing was just as effective as destroying the industrial enterprises where those workers were employed. On May 27, 1943, Arthur Harris signed Bomber Command Order No. 173 for the operation code-named 'Gomorrah'." Our adversary thinks the same way, so don't comfort yourselves with illusions. What actually needs to be done. Don't whine and don't blame our own people for Russian strikes. That is part of the enemy's design: to have populists force military activity out into the open field, where it is easy to destroy. Support every military need: rent out premises to the military and for military production, and talk less about what's where and who's doing what. Just as the military shields civilians on the line of contact, civilians must shield and support the military throughout the entire depth of the country. We have to acknowledge and accept that the life of, say, a Patriot crew is worth more to the country than yours or mine, because next time that crew will be able to save someone else. And the life of a draft dodger can only become worth anything at all once he starts basic military training."

Kiev has been under continuous Russian drone attack for 80 hours. Another warehouse in the city is producing lots of secondary explosions after being hit -- presumably ammunition, again. Every strike is a calculation: the cost of the munition vs the value of the target, the number of munitions available vs the likelihood of the target being fully destroyed by X number of munitions, the confidence in the target having been correctly identified, the potential collateral damage vs the value of the target. In recent months, none of the technical aspects of the Russian calculation have changed. What has changed is the collateral damage calculation. Before this year, military targets such as "secret" ammo dumps and drone workshops in dense civilian areas - residential neighborhoods, downtown and such - were usually off-limits, regardless of the available munitions or the value of the target, outside of some very care edge cases. The sustained and increased Ukrainian terror campaign against the Russian civilian population and civilian commercial targets has persuaded Russian leadership to slightly relax the rules for targeting and accept a slightly larger number of collateral damage -- first at the beginning of the year, then again in spring, and now a little more. The dial has been turned a few degrees, and life in Kiev and other major Ukrainian cities has already become a lot less pleasant. None of these "secret" "well-hidden" stockpiles of missiles and drones are actually secret -- what has stopped the Russian military from striking them before is the fact that they are concealed among civilians, and avoiding collateral damage has so far been an extreme priority for Russian command, at the severe expense of operational tempo and potential high-value strikes. The intensity can still be dialed up by a lot if necessary.

Ukraine enters a full-blown food crisis, with rationing now in effect on essential items, no more than six eggs per person, and similar limits on other staples. As we discussed in our latest episode, the food crisis in Eastern Europe is beginning to take shape, and it’s likely to turn ugly as winter sets in. The spoils of a civilian logistics war that Ukraine started.

New RWA NEWS episode is out now! It's almost two hours long, and there's no paywall. Is there going to be a food crisis in Eastern Europe? Setbacks to Russian (and Ukrainian) IT and e-banking superiority vs. the West. The EU is starting to push Ukrainian refugees back to the front. Ozon warehouses are getting hit as well now. The gas shortage situation. The Azeri lobby strikes back: a deeper look at how strong it is and why it's so hard to get rid of it. 2000s archetypes are awakening in the Zoomer mind: TikTok emos and skinheads. The Kanye distraction. The Northern Sea Route AKA Ice Silk Road. Japan is BIG MAD. The Liberal Shlossberg & the Communist Bondarenko. Yeah, a lot has been happening in Russia now that holiday season is over. Also available on Gumroad

Yaroslav Ovsyuk, a criminal connected to Ukrainian military intelligence who received "fame" for calling in fake bomb threats to Russian schools and attempting to recruit Russian children to commit terrorist attacks, is whining about Russian raids around Druzhkovka on his Telegram channel: "ATTENTION In the Druzhkovka area, a [expletive] sabotage-and-reconnaissance group got 12 km into our rear and slaughtered all the [drone] pilots. Don't open the door to anyone!!!! Check who it is, put them face-down on the ground, and interrogate them, then report the information to your command." They say that "the best air defence is your tanks sitting on the enemy's airfield"; likewise, the best defence against drones is a knife in the drone operator's throat.
