Application, application, waitlist… If you’re like me, a high school student constantly looking for opportunities, you’ve probably gotten this email before: “After careful consideration, we are placing you on our waitlist. Your application showed promise, and should additional spots open up, your application will be reconsidered.” Sometimes, the constant repetition of application, application, waitlist can make you lose hope. But here’s my advice to other high school students constantly getting waitlisted & losing their confidence in themselves. Keep your head up, and keep sending in those letters of continued interest. Waitlists are not instant rejections, nor do they determine the quality of you as a student, or as a person. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that, so here’s your reminder :) A few weeks ago, I was waitlisted from the very selective Civic Innovation Academy hosted by Civics Unplugged at UCLA. See, this was one of my dream programs, so I spent hours on my original application, trying to get every single detail perfect. However, even with all my hard work on my supplements and perfecting every detail of my resume, I still got waitlisted. This hadn’t been my first waitlist, so at this point I just wanted to give up. Sending in a letter of continued interest seemed futile and I believed that my time would be better spent repeating the whole process over again and spending hours filling out even more extensive applications to different programs. Luckily, I spoke to one of my close friends (Finn Liu, who I met at the Law & Trial program that I attended with Worldstrides at Stanford University) about this, and he urged me to send in a letter of continued interest. At first, I didn’t want to, as the waitlist email left me depleted of all hope. But after a good amount of convincing, Finn finally got me to write a letter of continued interest and send it in. This was a few weeks ago. I was accepted into the 2024 Civic Innovation Academy at UCLA! Overall though, I’m telling this story to instill hope in other high school students (and really, any students) who get discouraged everytime they see the waitlist status. Keep trying, sending in those letters of continued interest, and working hard! You’ll get in where you’re meant to be :)

Bu yo'qlik shundayki, u tushunish mumkin bo'lgan mavjudlikni yo'qligi emas, shunchaki butun yo'qlik, uning ziddi, teskarisi yo'q, bu degani u - haqiqiy mutlaqlik! 💠 @koinottilsimi

Najmiddin Ermatov

To research enthusiasts: here's how to start your research journey! Define Your Research Question: •Identify a Topic: Choose a subject that interests you and has sufficient scope for investigation. •Narrow Your Focus: Refine your topic to a specific question or hypothesis. Conduct a Literature Review: •Gather Sources: Use academic databases, libraries, and reputable online sources to collect existing literature on your topic. •Evaluate Sources: Critically assess the credibility, relevance, and bias of each source. •Identify Gaps: Look for areas where existing research is lacking or questions that remain unanswered. Choose Your Research Methodology: •Qualitative Methods: Suitable for exploratory research that seeks to understand underlying reasons and motivations. Methods include interviews, focus groups, and content analysis. •Quantitative Methods: Ideal for testing hypotheses and measuring variables. Methods include surveys, experiments, and statistical analysis. •Mixed Methods: Combine qualitative and quantitative approaches to provide a more comprehensive perspective. Develop a Research Proposal: •Statement of the Problem: Clearly articulate the issue you are addressing. •Objectives and Hypotheses: Define what you aim to discover or prove. •Methodology: Detail the methods you will use to gather and analyze data. •Significance of the Study: Explain the potential impact and relevance of your research. Plan Your Research: •Create a Timeline: Break down your research process into manageable tasks with deadlines. •Budget Resources: Identify the tools, software, and materials you need and plan accordingly. •Ethical Considerations: Ensure your research adheres to ethical standards, particularly if it involves human or animal subjects. Collect Data: •Systematic Approach: Follow your planned methodology rigorously. •Record Keeping: Maintain detailed and organized records of your data collection process. Analyze Data: •Qualitative Analysis: Look for patterns, themes, and insights in your qualitative data. •Quantitative Analysis: Use statistical tools to analyze numerical data and test hypotheses. •Triangulation: If using mixed methods, compare results from different methods to enhance validity. Interpret Results: •Compare with Literature: Relate your findings to the existing body of knowledge. •Discuss Implications: Consider the broader impact of your results on the field and potential applications. Report Your Findings: •Structure: Follow a clear structure (e.g., introduction, methodology, results, discussion, conclusion). •Writing Style: Aim for clarity, conciseness, and coherence. •Citations: Properly reference all sources to avoid plagiarism and acknowledge the work of others.
