| 2 | Who's old enough to remember what this is?
Hint: It's the start of the work week! | 56 |
| 3 | So Danny’s got this new T-shirt he’s really proud of. I’m proud of it too actually. It’s got this character from три кота he really likes called Dr. Shock. An unsavory, villainous character, but who am I to argue with an 7yo about his choices.
Anyhow, what makes this T-shirt extra special to me is that it is designed by one of my students, the exceptionally talented artist and designer, Anna!
Danny’s been nagging me to buy him something with this character on it for weeks, but I couldn’t find a good resolution image of him anywhere online despite searching high and low. Until I turned to Anna. She put it together beautifully in just a few days despite being one of the busiest people I know.
Big shout out to Anna for her great work. And while I’m at it, a big thank you to all you guys for putting in so much talent, good energy and loyalty into this channel. If ever you have any artistic or design ideas you wanna bring to life in the future, I can put you through to Anna, cuz she’s just a Class A Artist! | 74 |

| 5 | The Leonardo Di Caprio Syndrome
#EnExarticles
You guys, ladies especially, are gonna get a real kick outta this one: The Leonardo Di Caprio Syndrome. It’s a real behavioral pattern diagnosed by the internet and is empirically observable in nature and red-carpet galas.
It designates men who date significantly younger women and break off the relationship before or when the woman hits her mid twenties. What’s this got to do with the Hollywood star? Well, it’s because ol’ Leo has been known for quite a while to exemplify this behavior by primarily dating women who are under 25 years of age, only to break up with them when they cross that threshold- 7 women under these exact same circumstances according to my last count.
This sort of preferential behavior is nothing new. In fact, it is almost the norm among us uber-macho men to pursue relationships with younger women, sometimes significantly younger. Attaching a celebrity’s name to the phenomena only makes it more disseminatable, since the Mustafa syndrome won’t cut it.
Ladies, hold your ire, it’s just the way we’re wired. It is a classic case of God, or Darwin made me do it so commonly accepted that society winces in agony at the sight of a fifty something year old woman dating a man in his twenties, but bats nary a lash at the reverse.
To be fair though, fairer than society, this type of behavior could be rightfully pathologized when it correlates with an avoidance on the man’s part of traditional, committed relationships like marriage. It can also create a severe power imbalance due to the huge difference in life experience and emotional maturity between the old fart and his arm candy. Last but not least, the Leonardo Di Caprio Syndrome can sometimes be linked with a man’s own desire to remain forever young and attractive to women. Now where’s that packet of collagen peptides I bought last week? | 83 |

| 7 | 5 Ways To Run Out Of Energy
1) Gas out
"Run out of energy"
Some parents gas out pretty quick when trying to set their stubborn kids straight. But not me. I keep going at it with my son till we’re both a year older.
2) Burn out
"A state of severe exhaustion caused by overworking and unmanaged stress".
I thought I was burning out at my job. But it turned out all I needed was a little alcohol to pick me right back up.
3) Running on empty
"To continue to work or push forward when you have no more energy left".
On his 4th straight double-shift at Пятёрочка, Mark was running on empty, walking around the aisles like a zombie unable to tell apart the vegetables from neighborhood babulas.
4) Out of juice
"Completely run out of power".
My phone is out of juice. I need to find a charger quick.
5) Tuckered out
"Completely exhausted"
I was tuckered out after my 5 minute jog this morning. | 97 |

| 12 | Switched on Vs Turned on
As verbs “turn on” and “switch on” mean the same thing: to activate something like a device, the light, or a mechanical object. Turn/switch on the light Sam. reading in the dark will hurt your eyes.
That much is good and clear. But when "switched on" and "turned on" are used to describe someone’s state, often by using ‘am’ and ‘are’, their meanings become drastically different, and knowing that difference doesn’t only mark your advanced language skills but can also save you a month’s worth of embarrassment.
“Switched on” is to be alert, clear-minded, focused on the task at hand and ready to do it. My head was a bit foggy this morning. But after that big gulp of energy drink I am now totally switched on and ready to complete that fancy, new time-travel machine I’ve been building.
“Turned on” is to be sexually aroused. Yep! If you didn’t already realize the incredible importance of knowing the difference between these two phrases, try going into your office in the morning and telling your colleague that you are so turned on for all the tasks you have to do. | 172 |

| 15 | The many meanings of "We"
Pt.1: The You & I we
“We” is a very interesting pronoun in the English language. It marks different interpersonal dynamics, sets boundaries and determines the level of closeness and inclusivity in groups.
The pronoun is a very crucial one to fully understand, because on the surface it sounds pretty warm and straightforward, when in reality it’s a lot more.
In this short series of posts we are going to explore together the 5 interpersonal implications of “we”, starting with today’s dynamic: The You and I we.
This is the “we” that everyone wants to be part of- the warm, inclusive “we”. Let’s (you and I) get a cup of coffee. The two of us. Lovely.
The you-and-I we is a public acknowledgment that a specified person or group of people and the speaker are all part of the same group; sharing some sort of common identity.
This can get a bit tricky though when one person thinks that “we” are a group, but the other doesn’t. That’s why in certain cultures like the Japanese and Korean, speakers are often very careful in their uses of “we” in normal conversation for this exact reason. It may be insulting to come out straight and point out to a person that they have mistakenly identified themselves with the group.
How does “we” work in your language? Does it also have different interpersonal implications as it does in English? Let us know in the comment section and stay tuned for the rest of the series. | 188 |

| 17 | If horrific and horrible are similar, why aren’t terrific and terrible?
We’ve already established long ago that English is a crazy language. Sometimes though there’s a method to the madness. Like in the case of the two pairs of words we have before us today.
"Horrific" and "horrible" kept their semantic structure pretty much intact over time. Their common meaning did not change throughout their usage history. But "terrific" in the second pair drifted in meaning, i.e. changed its meaning over time, from the Latin root Terrere, to frighten (terror causing) to its contemporary meaning of good, excellent or great.
This change in the meaning of "terrific" happened in conjunction with a change in the concept of the Christian God, who was once a God of terror referred to with words such as "magnificent", "awesome", and "terrific", but who is now perceived as a gentler God who still exemplifies these adjectives but in their new, concurrently ameliorated meanings.

| 18 | You're not in Kansas anymore
#AmericanEnglish #EnglishExpress #learnEnglish
“You’re not in Kansas anymore” is an American English phrase used to emphasize to a person that he/she has left a familiar, comfortable, or predictable situation and entered a strange, unfamiliar, or extremely challenging environment.
Say you’ve got a friend, for example, who just started a new grueling, high-stakes job after a career spent doing easy ones. They come to you all freaked out about their new job, so you say to them “you’re not in Kansas anymore”.
Sometimes we also add “Dorothy” to the phrase to make it “You’re not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy” and signify the phrase's origin in the movie "The Wizard of Oz", where the protagonist “Dorothy”, a young girl from rural Kansas, is wrested out of her cozy, bucolic environment by a tornado and thrust into a wild adventure with strange characters.
As someone who has lived in Kansas for many years, I can vouch for the aptitude of this phrase, having personally experienced the quaintness of that American state as compared with the often overwhelming realities of other places in the US like Chicago or LA. | 166 |

| 20 | Liking fast & slow
There are times in life when we like someone or something right way, and others when we need a little more time to start liking a person or thing. Here are 4 ways to express this idea strongly and succinctly.
Take to
This phrasal verb has multiple meanings, one of which is to like someone or something, often quickly. My new colleagues and I took to each other from day 1.
Take a shine to
Similar to “take to” this means to like quickly, or have a positive first impression. My job interview went well and I think the interviewer took a shine to me.
Warm up to
This is to like more slowly and gradually. My son hated the idea of traveling to Moscow by train for seventeen hours, but warmed up to it the more I talked to him about all the fun we'll have.
To grow on
If someone or something grows on us, they become more liked, or appreciated as time goes by. When I first tried red caviar it tasted awful, but it grew on me over time to the point where I now really enjoy it.
Red caviar is, in this sense, an acquired taste-a person or thing that becomes more appreciated over time. | 137 |
