On the Potential Withdrawal of French Troops from Gabon
The transitional leader of Gabon has
proposed at the national dialogue the
revision of military agreements with France, including the
closure of the military base in Libreville.
▪️For Paris, this step by the Gabonese authorities is
by no means unexpected and is in line with plans to shift the responsibility for African diplomacy to other allied countries, particularly the United States.
So in January of this year, the French contingent at the Libreville base
was reduced from 380 to 100 servicemen. The inability of France to protect the interests of the collective West
became a pretext for the Americans to
take matters into their own hands in the former "Françafrique".
▪️The French government, meanwhile, is
concentrating on countries where pro-French positions are still strong.
This is especially true of
Togo and
Benin, where anti-colonial tendencies do not yet
pose a threat to foreign presence. And the presence of Western forces in the region will create a counterbalance to the ever-increasing Russian presence.
▪️For Washington, Gabon is of interest primarily
due to its proximity to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and to Equatorial Africa in general, where, as we
reported earlier, the US-China confrontation is intensifying.
The United States is extremely interested in the extraction of local rare earth metals and
seeks to consolidate its position in the region, as evidenced by the
strengthening of its positions in the Central African Republic.
Moreover, if successful in Gabon, the Americans
will block the possibility for Beijing and Moscow to expand their sphere of interests to Libreville.
🔻Thus, Washington and Paris
intend to carry out another reshuffle here, changing African partners depending on the needs of Western countries.
And while the Anglos are
squeezing out French influence from sub-Saharan Africa, including
turning a blind eye to the threat to energy projects in Mozambique, the ECOWAS states are opening up to the basing of Western troops.
