SARAGADAM GANESH
AIR-50
70.67 MARKS
Started preparing for gate in 2020...due to COVID I couldn't attend any classes so followed unacademy free classes and got 10k rank in 2021. Again prepared myself for 2022 got 5k rank. Thought this preparation can't get me into psu.so came to Hyderabad joined made easy for GATE 2023, got 2658 rank. since i was 21 passed out so got depressed and not in a position to take drop and waste one more year. I came to know about my mistakes and told my parents about this. They told me to take decision wisely so that I shouldn't regret again.meanwhile I got shortlisted for hpcl and BARC scientist interviews through separate exams not through gate. These two interviews boosted my confidence to take one more year drop and work hard for it and achieved this rank...
2021- 43marks- 10k
2022- 41- 5k
2023- 45- 2658
Hpcl- gt cleared but couldn't clear pi round
BARC SOc- interview duration 58mins- but couldn't make it to final list
As the selection ratio is less. So i didn't expect
my name in final list.
2024-
Hpcl- written cleared- but didn't attend gt and pi
BARC- Technical officer- written cleared-interview 53 mins- result awaiting
BARC- Stipendary trainee- written cleared- interview 45mins- result awaiting
GATE- 70.67marks- AIR50
ISRO scintist- written cleared- waiting for interview call
NPCIL- interview shortlisted-result awaiting
BARC SOc-interview was not so good again couldn't make it into final list
Above mentioned are just for the reference who thought gate is just an exam and can clear within one year. It may take time but if u workhard u can get it in one year otherwise it will take time..but u will get it if u give wholehearted efforts towards whatever u r preparing for.
Coming to my preparation strategy
Made easy class notes-workbook-test series-pyqs (4-5 times before gate).and in made easy telegram group students post good questions better if u spend 30 mins in telegram once in everyday..if u think that is tough question save it and try to solve it till u get the concept behind it.
The reason why I took these many years is that I am from diploma background in which I didn't studied mathematics and it is important subject. Even in technical questions u will find mathematical relations. Which took a lot of time to learn. I was an Average student. Previously I have studied only concept then came to know that gate requires concept, problem solving and time management. Learned about it through my 3 attempts and made it in my 4th attempt. Hope this helps many students struggling like me. All the best lot of PSUs are waiting for u. Prepare hard give ur best.

"Preparation Strategy for HPCL Exam
To prepare for the HPCL exam, I allocated 1-2 hours daily for non-technical portions and utilized the remaining time to revise class notes and previous year's questions (PYQs) of ESE. I also made it a point to revise the material repeatedly.
Additionally, I enrolled in the Made Easy test series for the HPCL exam, which greatly aided me in time management and non-technical portions. I took the mock tests at the same time as the scheduled exam, approximately three weeks prior.
Group Discussion (GD) Tips
During the GD, the topic was centered around a large petroleum corporation modernizing its petrol pumps in rural areas. We were required to suggest a strategy for this initiative. My advice for the GD round is to speak clearly and confidently, highlighting 3-4 key points. This approach will help you clear this round. It's also essential to maintain eye contact with the panel members, but avoid staring at them intensely.
Personal Interview (PI) Experience
During the PI, I faced a panel of 12 members. The interview began with a brief introduction, so it's crucial to ensure your introduction is concise and to the point.
The panel then inquired about my decision to leave my previous job, which was a high-paying position in an upstream oil and gas production company. I provided a clear and logical explanation for my decision.
The panel also asked questions based on my CV and general HR-related queries, such as whether I would be willing to accept a posting in a remote location.
If you have prior work experience, be prepared to answer questions related to your job. If you lack work experience, focus on thoroughly preparing your technical subjects, including topics like thermodynamics, power plants, and heat and mass transfer."

Sir, for gd/gt, the topics were arbitrary and general knowledge and personality test apart from mutual respect towards fellow participants and critical thinkinh were tested. For PI point of view, I was asked about my previous experiences and constant counter to why I wanna join sail were thrown at us. Basically they wanna see if you are ready to work in any unit(mines or plants) and in any condition.

Importance of GATE XE
Regarding IIT's
if your XE rank is good then you can apply in
1)IIT MADRAS, Bombay - Mechanical, Aerospace, Applied Mechanics
2)IIT Delhi - Applied Mechanics
3)IISC -Aerospace
From placement perspective Opportunity for Manufacturing branch in core sector is limited
And don't join IIT in any interdisciplinary branch since the companies for those branches are limited
If your GATE ME rank is good and if your primary aim is placement choose IIT Bombay Over IISC Banglore
MS placement in IIT Madras is very good so apply for MS program also (in Design and Thermal only)
For IIT/IISC interviews keep the fundamentals very clear
Regarding Rank : In my time I had a XE rank of 35 still I couldn't get IIT Bombay Thermal
NIT Trichy, Karnataka and Warangal have good placement stats for core branches
If you are from Mechanical Background join Mechanical, Applied Mechanics and Aerospace branch only (either MS or MTech)

I come from diploma background, I bought standard books to prepare from scratch, standard books used to take lot of time and very less output, by the time I understood that I graduated in 2022, with nothing in my hand and just merely passed the Gate-2022.
After that I worked in a solar based company for 8 months, then after that I joined the madeeasy prime batch in March 2023,
After each subject got covered we were told by the faculties that revise on the same day, solve Workbooks, PYQ's & make short notes parallel, also do parallel revison of the subjects previously completed so that they don't vaporize from mind. I followed the same approach till November, but in the months of December and January when the classes got over I couldn't handle the pressure, Result :
Gate-2024
ME- Rank 4847
XE - Rank 547
I had better expectations from Gate ME But due to not being able to handle the pressure and not working on weaknesses in the last 2 months I made lot of mistakes in Gate ME and completely messed it up.
I wasn't expecting anything from XE due to that gave it calmly.
To my knowledge later scored better in XE compared to ME,
( I learned that time taking pressure makes things even worse )
Anyways, by joining RI batch 2024, I resumed my preparation in June with the batch, along with that I applied in winter session for IITM as I was in the preparation mode & in touch with the concepts, could take some time out for preparation of MS interviews, prepared SOP's on area of interest for research, made notes for interview side by side in a copy prepared maths and technical on daily basis, was preparing for gate and interviews in parallel in the October month. Finally could convert it into selection.
Thanks to all the faculties for guidance and support. I'm glad that I joined RI batch to resume the preparation, that ultimately helped me be in touch with the subjects and therefore being able to crack the written & interview.

Sir, my name's Ajeet Kumar Sahu, I'm from Bhilai, CG.
I was working in pvt industry for 2.5 years... And in last year of my job I took ese mains classes...
It was tough to study along with my job but I always used to think I deserve more and i need to make time to study anyhow...
I resigned from my job in dec 21 to focus completely on gate 22.
I used to plan my everyday, including my work, study, test, revision, food and sleep... In free time in office I used to solve questions from telegram group to keep myself in flow...
Sir, In gate 2022, I got AIR-345 (ME) and AIR-67 (XE).
Based on that I got placed in nalco, ntpc, sail, ioc, etc
I joined SAIL as I got posting in my hometown.
Now I go office from my home, enjoy time with family and friends... All this was never possible without blessings of parents and teachers... A big load of thanks to you sir.
Looking back it's a beautiful journey, and looking forward to have more exciting and challenging experiences.

Both have their own merits and demerits
BEL:
1. All executives who joins at E-ll gets basic of ₹40000, and posted to any one of nine units. (Bengaluru, Ghaziabad, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Machilipatnam(AP), Panchkula (HR), Kotdwara (UK), Navi Mumbai. All the units are in city so postings will always be urban environment.
2. Work profile is either D&E(R&D) or production, both are good for male and female employees, with mostly office work with occasional on site work for user trials, testing or commissioning.
HPCL:
1. My friends were in hpcl and postings will be mostly rural or far from cities as it's operational job. One of my colleague joined hpcl in kutch district,
2. basic salary is ₹50000.
If location is preference, join BEL, if salary is preference join HPCL.
BEL consists of both RnD and producion whereas hpcl will be operational role in refineries.
