Inflation and Nifty50 Results for Q3FY23 - How it is killing markets!
Inflation print for the majority of the markets are out for Jan month. USA, UK shows falling trends for month over month comparison whereas for India; JAN CPI is 3 months high (month on month comparison YoY basis basis); and again, out of the RBI comfort band.
In this blog, I have tried to dig out the data to understand what is happening with companies' margins at the ground level and can we say that the operating margins have started to show the signs of revival and can we really conclude that the worst for inflation is behind us?
Nifty50 companies results analysis for Q3FY23
a. Out of 50 companies that have reported their Q3 results so far, 2 companies have reported revenue degrowth YoY% and rest have reported revenue growth.
b. After top line, talking about EBITDA absolute numbers growth; 9 companies have reported EBITDA degrowth (absolute EBITDA this quarter is less than absolute EBITDA last year same quarter) and rest have reported EBITDA growth.
c. Continuing our discussion on EBITDA, let's look at the interesting matrix i.e. EBITDA margin growth details for the same 50 companies. It is interesting to note that 31 companies have reported margin pressures (EBITDA margin this quarter is less than EBITDA margin last year same quarter) and rest 19 companies have reported EBITDA margin growth.
d. Now let's move on to the bottom line in P&L statement, it is to be noted that in the same pool of 50 companies, 1 company have reported net loss absolute figures and rest all have reported net profit absolute figures for the quarter.
e. And speaking about the Net profit growth YoY% in absolute terms (not talking about the Net profit margin), 12 companies have reported degrowth in profit (absolute PAT this quarter is less than absolute PAT last year same quarter) and rest all have reported profit growth YoY%.
So, the point here is that effects of inflation is clearly visible in margins. So, what happened to WPI numbers which are continuously trending downwards after hitting a high of around 16.63% in India. That downtrend in WPI is not reflecting in the margins of the company. Additionally; the fact that BRI Index (Baltic Dry Index) is at very low level right now (nearly May-2020 low levels), I am worried if inflation is coming back, as the logistics form an important part of the cost for many companies.
Commentary for the majority companies sounds very confident about logistics and material cost, though the data we have seen now does not suggest the same, and that's what worries me!
I will post an update on this, when any new relevant data emerges.
