There are six languages that have the ‘Classical’ status in India: All of them are listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Thefirst languageto be accorded withclassical statuswasTamilin2004. A classical language is a language with an independent literary tradition and a large and ancient body of written literature. Sindhi was added by the 21st Amendment Act, 1967. Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were added by the 71st Amendment Act, 1992. Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, and Santhali were added by the 92nd Amendment Act, 2003.
