-PAUL SZYPULA Ilhan Omar’s dad allegedly lied on his own naturalization application, which means Omar’s derivative application would then be void. This one is damning. Omar’s father didn’t just flee a civil war. According to a historian who spoke to the New York Post, he was a full colonel in Siad Barre’s military regime. Barre was Somalia’s dictator from 1969 to 1991, whose forces were accused of mass killings. Omar’s father was loyal until the end and misrepresented himself as a refugee to get into the United States. Omar has always called him an educator. The record says he was a senior officer under that dictator, Barre. He only left after the regime collapsed in 1991. That is not the profile of someone who qualifies for refugee status under U.S. law, which bars anyone who ordered, assisted, or participated in persecution. If those claims hold, the lie would have been material. Material misrepresentation on the refugee application or later naturalization papers is grounds for denaturalization. And when a parent’s citizenship is revoked for concealment or willful misrepresentation, the children who derived their citizenship through him generally lose it too. Omar says she became a citizen in 2000 as a minor through her father. That claim rests on the same paperwork now under investigation. The Monday raid and the subpoenas to relatives are how investigators test whether Omar’s story matches the files. The family has asked the public to take their word for it. The feds now have the records. If the father hid who he was to get in, the entire chain is compromised. That’s the case the investigation is building. So now not only does Omar have to worry about her birth certificate being unearthed which says she was too old to be naturalized under her dad, her own dad’s application may have been fraudulent.
