A stunning report published in the June 2010 British Medical Journal (BMJ) revealed that top scientists who persuaded the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare H1N1 (aka “swine flu”) a global pandemic held close financial ties to the Big Pharma companies that profited from the sale of those vaccines. This report, authored by Deborah Cohen (BMJ editor) and Philip Carter (journalist with London’s Bureau of Investigative Journalism), exposed the hidden ties that drove WHO to declare a pandemic, resulting in billions of dollars in profits for the Big Pharma vaccine manufacturers.While all the H1N1 “hype” was happening, the WHO refused to disclose any conflicts of interests between its top advisors and the Big Pharma companies who would make billions based on its decisions. In other words, all the kickbacks were “swept under the table.” Unbelievably, in response to the BMJ report, WHO secretary-general (Dr. MargaretChan) had the audacity to defend the secrecy, saying that WHO intentionally kept the financial ties a secret in order to “... protect the integrity and independence of the members while doing this critical work... [and] also to ensure transparency.” So let me get this straight – they are “keeping secrets” to “ensure transparency?” Isn’t that a contradiction in terms? I believe George Orwell would have called that “double speak.” Do you remember the study mentioned earlier which concluded that the promotional literature sent to doctors from pharmaceutical companies has absolutely no basis in scientific fact? The study showed that virtually all of the data in Big Pharma’s promotional brochures is either imprecise or has been overstated. In other words, they all contain lies. Now here’s the scary thing: most doctors rely on the information in these brochures when making a decision about what drugs to prescribe to patients. They have blind, unsubstantiated faith that Big Pharma is engaged in rigorous scientific studies and clinical trials, they read the brochures, believe the lies, and then prescribe the drugs to their patients. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported in February 2002 that 87% of the physicians involved in the establishment of national guidelines on disease have financial ties to Big Pharma. Talk about conflicts of interests! In the July 26, 2000, issue of the JAMA, Dr. Barbara Starfield documented that over 225,000 deaths each year are due to medical errors, which is considered to be an “iatrogenic” cause of death. What does “iatrogenic” mean? The term “iatrogenic” means “caused by medical treatment.” The first part of the word, “iatro,” comes from the Greek word “iatros” for medical or medicinal, while “genic” comes from “genesis,” which means origin. A study by Harvard University professor Lucian Leape found that one million patients are injured by errors during hospital treatment annually, with some 120,000 deaths. One out of every 200 patients in hospitals in New York State had an iatrogenic death. Remember that less than 10% of medical mistakes are reported to hospital authorities.
