Kursk region, a civilian comes across dead soldiers on the road

Can someone from this conflict (not observers) explain this behavior? Am I naive in believing this is a new behavior in soldiers and that previous generations of soldiers tried to hold on till the end and didn't kill themselves when wounded? Is this particular to Russians?
