In my view, although both large and small classes offer distinct advantages, small classes are preferable, particularly for language learning. Large classes have their merits for language learners. This diversity replicates real-life settings, enabling students to practice their language with a variety of speakers and exchange ideas, vocabulary, and feedback. This environment is especially advantageous for introverted students who generally find it challenging to speak in public and express themselves. By interacting with various classmates, these students gradually overcome their shyness and build confidence. Conversely, small classes offer unique advantages that large classes cannot match. One significant benefit of small class sizes is the individual attention each student receives. This is particularly crucial for beginner language learners who may struggle with the fundamentals of a new language. In smaller classes, teachers can allocate more time to each student, addressing their specific challenges and catering to their needs. As a result, students who receive personalized attention are more motivated to participate actively in class discussions and apply what they have learned. While large classes provide exposure to diverse communication styles, smaller classes offer a more effective learning environment. Many students feel reluctant to speak in front of large audiences, which can stifle their progress. Smaller classes, on the other hand, foster a sense of collaboration and create an intimate setting that encourages students to develop their fluency through frequent practice. Finnish schools exemplify this approach. In Finland, small class sizes are prioritized, particularly in primary education. These classes emphasize individual attention, engaging teaching methods, and a supportive learning environment. This approach has led to remarkable educational outcomes, with Finland consistently ranking highly in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). In conclusion, while large classes offer the chance to interact with peers from diverse backgrounds and develop real-world skills, I believe that small classes provide superior learning prospects. Small classes facilitate individualized attention, interactive learning, and ample practice opportunities.
