The Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) examination is the first stage of the Indian Mathematical Olympiad Programme and is conducted by the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India). It is a three-hour examination with 30 questions and the answer to each question is an integer between 0 and 99 (both inclusive). The student has to report only the answer on an OMR sheet. There is no negative marking and the total marks is 100. Since the last few IOQMs turned out to be on the harder side (the median score in IOQM 2023 was 2 out of 100) the IOQM 2024 committee worked hard to come up with more accessible questions (what they thought would be so) for a greater proportion of students taking the test. In particular, the first 5 questions in the paper (https://lnkd.in/dpg9te8c...) were aimed at increasing the median score of IOQM 2024. While the committee was delighted to see the median score jump to 8, they were taken aback by the performance of the students on the easier questions (Questions 1 to 5 here https://lnkd.in/dpg9te8c...). Correct: 69042 ; Wrong: 38894 Q4 Correct: 75836 ; Wrong: 32100 Q5 Correct: 45669 ; Wrong: 62267 In spite of these questions in the paper about 6% of the students failed to register a non-zero score in IOQM 2024.
