Manasija Monastery (also known as Resava) is located in central Serbia. The monastery was founded in 1407 by the Serbian despot Stefan Visoki Lazerević. It is well fortified, because it was created during the expansion of the Ottoman Empire into the Balkans, when Turkish incursions were frequent. The fortress consists of 11 towers, of which the Despot's tower stands out. Constantine the Philosopher wrote that the construction lasted more than 10 years. The Turks managed to occupy the monastery for the first time in 1438. The army of the Serbian despot Đurđ Branković regained control of the monastery in 1444. After some more small attacks and burnings, the Turks finally captured the fortress in 1458. The following year , 1459, Smederevo, the capital of the Serbian despotism, also fell.
