Shashtra Pujan is the culmination of Dussehra celebrations in a Rajput household. For a Rajput is unimaginable without a weapon. He’s ordained by Shaashtra to wield Shashtra !

• Dussehra is the most important cultural celebration for Rajputs. Haqiqat Bahi of Maharaja Vijay Singh Ji details the celebrations of Navratris & Dussehra. Starting with the first day, when an image of Maa Durga is installed, jowar/barley sown for worship. Dussehra Court, Marwar !
• On 8th or Asthami, 9 young girls are worshipped as representatives of Durga by warriors. On Navami, havans were conducted, offerings made to goddess. Ashwa Pujan formed an important aspect of Dussehra celebrations. As horse is inseparable from a Rajput warrior, he’s worshipped.
• Rajput & horse had a similar relationship of that of Sword & Rajput. Maharana Ari Singh here seen showing his skills in horsemanship. It’s still followed at Udaipur in all its regalia.

Prithviraj's grand Kshatriya imagery in the later bardic and folk literature like Prithviraja Raso & Alha-Khand are a testament to his public perception and continued reverence. Even today the great Rai Pithora is seen as one of India's finest Kings a King of legacy, character and insurmountable courage. His legacy continues to inspire us today, as it did the mutineers in 1857 during their resistance against the British rule.

When a distant Hindu chief from Sindh named Chandraraj, who was not even his vassal, came to Prithviraj asking for his assistance against the ravaging Ghurids, Prtithviraj stood true to his vow and marched towards the west of his borders somewhere in the Sutlej valleys to inflict a sound defeat on the Ghurids in 1183 CE and capture Mohammad Ghori.
The latter was released at the cost of war indemnities and a promise of paying regular tribute in future, for which an officer used to visit Ghazni, which we come to know from the Colophon of the Kalpasutra, as well as the Phalodi Mata temple renovation's inscriptions & further also finds a mention in the HammiraMahakavya. As a captive of Ghurids, Prithviraj underwent both torture & attractive offers to bend his knee. He could've easily accepted the vassalage of Ghori and retained his life as well as his Kingdom. But as a King, his reply was a resounding No! His refusals eventually led to his death, but Prithviraj didn't failed the test of Kshatra-dharma. Some self styled intellectuals claim Prithviraj lacked farsightedness and broader geopolitical awareness, especially about the mleccha threat. But when Ghori captured Lahore in 1186 CE, thereby completing his conquest of Punjab, we see an immediate churn in the politics of Prithviraj. He repaired his relations with Tomaras of Delhi that had gone sour since the death of Vigraharaj Chauhan (who married in Tomaras via princess Desaladevi ). Later we see Tomaras fighting beside Chauhans shoulder to shoulder in both the battles of Tarain. Prithviraj ceased the sporadic sparring of the past few years and concluded a peace treaty with Solankis despite having an upper hand against them, thus obtaining crucial peace on the southern front. Post Ghurid conquest of Punjab, Prithviraj and Ghori were already sharing borders and considering the topography and the nature of the rivalry, it is no surprise that the Ghurid forces had multiple confrontations with the Rajputs.
This is further corroborated by all the literary texts and was later confirmed by Professor RB Singh and Dashrath Dharma in their books History of the Chahmanas and Early Chauhan Dynasties respectively too. Prithviraj kept Ghurid forces away at bay for years in that great struggle for freedom, which included various small confrontations and a clear victory at the battle of Tarain in 1191 until the Ghurids finally prevailed in 1192 in the Second Battle of Tarain. Contemporary texts like Prithvirajvijaya speak fondly of Prithviraj. He was seen & respected as a man of commitment, value and ideology. It was not merely because the poet of the text Jayanaka was his courtesan but later texts and chronicles too, such as Hammira Mahakavya & Surjan Charita, remember Prithviraj as a great ruler. When Ziauddin Barani in his Tarikh-i-Firozshahi (1357 CE) had to introduce Hammirdev Chauhan, the mighty ruler of Ranthambore, he introduced him as a 'descendant of Rai Pithora of Delhi'. Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan was not an ordinary Kshatriya; he was one of a kind, the spiritual level, the level of mental strength, the physique, the abilities; he was perfect in every aspect; he had the "Kshatriyatva" in this kaliyuga; he was a perfect Kshatriya blessed with the ability called "shabda bhedi baana".

WHY SAMRAT PRITHVIRAJA CHAUHAN IS THE CELEBRATED CHAMPION OF ALL HINDUS
Prithviraj Chauhan, the famous Rai Pithora of Delhi, was not the only emperor in the Indian subcontinent in the 12th century. The popularly conceived power centre of Delhi was not even his capital. It was ruled by the Tomar Rajputs, who acknowledged Prithviraj's supremacy. The Chahmanas of Shakambhari had their capital in Ajmer & weren't the only power in the North & other regions. The Gurjardesha & the Gangetic valley were at that time ruled by the Solanki and Gaharwar Rajputs, who were almost equal to the Chahmanas in terms of power & prestige. So what made Prithviraj such a highly respected and revered king amongst people of the entire Indian subcontinent? The answer lies not in the poems of Chandar Bardai, but in understanding the complex intricacies of that turbulent era and Prithviraj magnificent stand in the face of it. Bharat's western front, the very gate to Bharat, was already facing expansionist forces. Ghaznavids had raided multiple times; Mahmud for instance accounts for seventeen raids, Rai Pithora's own ancestors Govindaraj, Chamundaraj, Prithviraj, Arnoraj & Vigraharaj; all successfully fought against the Ghaznavids. But the Ghurids were different. The city of Ghor, surrounded by the five mighty mountains acting as a natural fortification, was a centre of iron mining, which aided in the heavy production of shields & armours. Their military expedition generally resulted in the annexation and administration of the territory. When Ghaznavids crumbled, Ghurids captured almost the whole of their territories & substantial parts of the Khwarazmian dynasty, eventually ruling over the whole of Afghanistan and more from Herat to Ghazna. Mohammad Ghori then turned towards India and swiftly won Sindh by 1175 and Punjab by 1185. Bhati Rajputs of Lodrava bravely resisted the Ghurids until 1178. Rawal Bhojdev Bhati even managed to defeat Ghori once. But eventually, they fell & later had to do a treaty. Similarly, Ghurids tried to overrun the Solanki kingdom of Gujarat but had to face a crushing defeat against the Rajput confederacy at Kasahrada. But the defeat was not at the battlefield alone. Ghori had to face humiliation at another front about which we come to know from the contemporary text Prithviraja Vijaya. Before marching for Kasahrada, Ghori had sent a messenger to Prithviraj Chauhan, when Prtithviraj was just about 14 or 15 years old back then. He invited the young Chahmana ruler to ally with him in waging a war against the Solankis, who were the arch rivals of the Chahmanas of Shakambari. But the young and decisively strong Prithviraj roared in anger:
"What should I tell him (Ghori)? Despite knowing that I have started my mission to kill mlecchas like him, he has sent his messenger to me?"
As apparent from the narration, Prithviraj had a clear basis for the distinction between his enemies & friends & that distinction was religion. The Chahmanas of Shakambari & Solankis of Gujarat had great enmity which worsened because of their relations with the Kalachuris & Chandela srespectively, both of them arch enemies of each other as well. This rivalry can be seen laying out later in battles between Chahmanas & Solankis from 1183 to 1187 CE. Yet Prithviraj not only refused to ally with Ghori against the Solankis but was also keen on assisting the other Hindu kingdoms in resisting the Ghurids. Though his kingdom wasn't the prime target & the Ghurid destruction took place in places that were under the vassalage of the Solankis. When Nadol fell, which was ruled by a faction of Chauhans who were hostile the Chahmanas of Shakambari and vassal of Solankis, a furious Prithviraj stood up for battle against Ghurid forces who had ravaged Nadol. Prithviraj had embraced the responsibility of protecting Dharma. It was his championing of the same Dharma that got him into an armed conflict with Ghurids far away from his territory.
