David Toop – Life On The Inside
Sub Rosa, 2016
#albumweek
It is al about feeling. It is al about resonating.
I listen to his work frequently. It inspires my for my own solo research. Zooming in the details.
It is a lesson in listening with the body. The atmosphere of introspection, also meditation, like with Susana Santos music. I can recommend it to everyone.

Robert Wyatt – Rock Bottom
Virgin, 1974
#albumweek
I didn’t had a strong connection to Robert Wyatt’s music when I was young.
His high voice took some time getting used to.
But now I find it deeply moving and powerful. Over time, I’ve developed an affinity for high voices. (Fred Frith, also sings in a high register) These are major figures in music. Timeless!!
Robert Wyatt suffered a life-changing accident when he fell from a window, resulting in paralysis from the waist down. Rock Bottom became his first major artistic statement after the accident. This adds extra depth to the listener. The mix of instrumentation, space between notes, the intimate way he sings. Wyatt blends genres in its own unique way. You can discover new details every time you listen.

Jaimie Branch – Fly Or Die Fly Or Die Fly Or Die ((World War))
International Anthem, 2023
#albumweek
Her music is so powerful!
The intensity and necessity are very real and that is why I connect so much with her music i guess. I feel this very physically.
The blend of jazz with punk, rock, afro-carribean rhythms, vocals, works so good.
Unfortunately, those who face great struggles in life often depart early… She died in 2022.

Dr. John, The Night Tripper – Gris-Gris
ATCO, 1968
#albumweek
A dreamy, ghostly soundscape.
The atmosphere, the effects, the mystique around this album is amazing.
Musicians were experimenting with studio techniques and spaces of sound. The technical constraints within the 60s add character to this music.
I love unpolished music and ‘Gris Gris’ has the perfect kind of grain to me.
The instrumentation features abundant percussion, ghostly vocals, mandolin, guitar, and horns. No conventional rock band arrangements. The focus is entirely on mood and rhythm.
This album was a major inspiration for me in the creation of the Terre Sol Four project with horns.

Susana Santos Silva – Sometimes It's Raining A Lot
Matière Mémoire, 2020
#albumweek
I've always found brass instruments special. The trumpet is an instrument of boldness and bravery. I played the flugelhorn for two years in music school when I was little.
A trumpet has a powerful sound in the higher frequency range, it literally feels intense. It speaks directly to your nervous system.
On this album, trumpet is the foundation, but Susana expands the sound with electronics, to distort or support the sound.
The use of field recordings, sounds from the outside, places the listener in a wider environment. It fits an atmosphere of introspection, perhaps even meditation.
I love music to be discovered or felt rather than explained.
A small detail, i play pocket trumpet on my latest album. Not that i am really good at it, but that’s exactly why i use it, haha.

Fred Frith – Cheap At Half The Price
Ralph, 1983
#albumweek
I once saw the documentary ’Step Across’ the Border’ by Fred Frith. I wasn’t very familiar with his work at that time, but it was a real eye-opener for me.
It inspired me to approach music and sound differently. To search more freely, to break away from fixed categories or limitations.
Frith often experiments with instruments and unconventional sounds.
I was fortunate to work with him in 2021 in Ghent. It was a very nice experience.
I choose the album ‘Cheap at Half the Price’ because it shows how a musician known for experimental music can open up to more direct, accessible forms without losing his voice. It demonstrates a kind of artistic flexibility. Experimentation and accessibility don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Fred is one of the legends 😊

Luciano Cilio – Dialoghi Del Presente
EMI, 1977
#albumweek
In music, i search for a kind of emotional honesty. I want to feel something real. The music of Luciano Cilio is exactly that!
I discovered it through a friend who hosts a radio program.
Unfortunately, Luciano Cilio passed away at a very young age.
He died by suicide at the age of 33. His music carries the weight of that short life.
The search of meaning that never quite found its destination. This gives the music an intense character. This is pure naked melancholy.
Minimal and experimental classical music, infused with elements of folk traditions, free improvisation, and chamber music for acoustic instruments. The use of guitar, mandolin, flute, cello, woodwinds, percussion, and choral voices lends the work a very rich, layered texture.

Хэлло, ребята!
#albumweek

Shamek Farrah – First Impressions
Strata-East, 1974
#protasova #jazz
Strata East -
