An “under-16s social media ban” would not really be a ban at all. It would almost certainly mean millions of adults having to prove their identity online just to access parts of the internet - through age checks, biometric estimation and digital ID systems. And once that infrastructure exists, it does not stop at “child safety”. It creates the ability to tie your real identity to what you read, watch, search, say and share online -fundamentally changing the internet from open and anonymous to monitored and permission-based. The government’s consultation goes far beyond social media bans for children.
