Tsunamis can be generated in all of the world’s oceans, inland seas, and in any large body of water. They have caused damage and deaths in coastal areas all around the world and can strike any coast.
However, certain areas are particularly prone to #tsunamis and the devastation they can bring. This is due to their location near local tsunami sources, exposure to distant tsunami sources, and local bathymetry and topography.
78% Pacific Ocean (around the #geologically active “Ring of Fire”)
9% Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea
6% Mediterranean Sea
5% Indian Ocean
1% Other Seas
The highest percentage of these tsunamis was generated off Japan (20%), followed by Russia (8%) and Indonesia (8%). While most tsunamis are small and nondestructive or only affect coasts near their source, some tsunamis can cause damage and deaths on distant shores. The most significant distant tsunamis since 1900 originated off Alaska, Chile, Japan, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Russia.

A team led by Sunny Jung, professor of biological and environmental engineering at Cornell University, has developed a pioneering robot inspired by the Hawaiian apple snail. This prototype could revolutionize the way we collect harmful microplastics from our oceans.
🐌 𝗦𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗹-𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻:
Mimicking the snail’s undulating foot motion, the robot creates water surface flow, efficiently collecting floating microplastics.
This groundbreaking work combines biology, engineering, and environmental science, showcasing an innovative approach to one of our most pressing ecological challenges.

Telescoping makes it possible to increase the height of a crane as the construction progresses 🏗
1. Building telescoping on slab or console:
The crane is telescoping on the building: floor, elevator shaft, hopper, external console,... It is first mounted inside the structure to be built.
A telescoping frame is attached at different levels to allow the crane to be hoisted up at the same time as the construction without adding mast elements.
2. Telescopic by adding mast elements:
Thanks to a special frame equipped with cylinders, new mast elements are added to the crane as the construction site progresses and the building is raised. This system is shown in the video below

Anatomy of a tsunami, how they are formed!
“#Tsunami ” is a Japanese word meaning “harbor wave,” but that doesn’t say much about their nature, and tsunamis are not nearly restricted to harbors. A more accurate term would be “seismic sea waves,” and it would describe them more accurately. However, the name tsunami has stuck and it’s what everyone uses today. People sometimes refer to them as “tidal waves,” but that term is technically incorrect and should be avoided in this context.
Tsunamis are indeed waves, but unlike wind waves, they have a much larger wavelength. Think a bit about waves — in the context of physics, not in the context of sea waves. A defining characteristic of every wave is its wavelength. Wind waves have short wavelengths which can be clearly seen on any shoreline. They come in every few seconds, with a few meters in between the peaks — sometimes, even less.

In accordance with preliminary results, the airflow analysis around 30 Saint Mary Axe reveals a substantial influence of the surrounding structures on wind dynamics. These findings suggest that nearby buildings notably affect the speed, direction, and turbulence patterns of the airflow near the reference building.
This study considered various orientations, including non-dominant ones, providing a comprehensive understanding of the building’s response to different scenarios. It highlights the challenges faced by 30 Saint Mary Axe owing to the limited space between this building and its neighbors, potentially resulting in an acceleration of the airflow in the zone due to reduced distances between them. However, the absence of corners in the building design contributes to minimizing turbulence in the area.

Car traffic monitoring! 🔭
This drone solution from Parkalytics helps to gather data from the sky.
In city planning and traffic control, information is super important, and drones are like superheroes for getting that info.
Drones help us gather detailed traffic data from above, showing how many cars are moving, their speed, and even how they queue up. 🚕
This information improves intersection safety and efficiency.
Plus, using the same technology, we understand both moving and parked cars, aiding in better land use planning while also tracking parking duration without needing personal data, ensuring privacy.
