Writing Skills to Be Tested Through Subjective Questions
Bhupender Sharma | @timesofindia.com
New Delhi: The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) examinations will now include written/subjective questions along with multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Such questions will constitute up to 15% in some examinations and up to 20% in others.
The inclusion of subjective questions in Tier-2 examinations will also allow the Commission to assess candidates’ writing skills. The SSC has already started introducing written questions in departmental-level examinations, including the exam scheduled for August 23.
According to the notification issued by the SSC, the Senior Secretariat Assistant (SSA), Upper Division Clerk (UDC) Examination 2025 and the Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) and Lower Division Clerk (LDC) Departmental Competitive Examination will include descriptive-type questions.
The questions for the descriptive paper will be displayed on a computer screen, while candidates will have to write their answers in the physical answer booklet provided at the designated place.
Several major SSC examinations are scheduled in the coming period, including the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination 2026, in which more than 28 lakh candidates are expected to appear.
The CGL examination is conducted in two tiers. While Tier 1 will continue to be an objective-type examination, Tier 2 will also include descriptive-type questions.
In short: SSC is moving beyond an MCQ-only format in some examinations, with subjective/descriptive questions being introduced to assess candidates’ written communication and writing skills.
