𝟐𝟐 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞, 𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 Every weekday. A family, in tow. To school and to work. A routine for families throughout this island nation. A father, honouring his wife and children, fulfilling his responsibilities. 22 April 2024, 7.07am, would change all that - Lives irrevocably changed, for the worst. Mr Muhammad Azril, a police coast guard officer, had just dropped off his wife and a daughter. His eldest, Afifah Munirah binte Muhammad Azril, 17, had a college run at Temasek Polytechnic. She needs to be there on time. A routine drop-by turned into a tragedy. If his wife and a younger daughter were still onboard at 7.07am at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Tampines Avenue 4, it could have been worst. This sobering fact cannot take away the immense and unspeakable grief at the loss of his/their eldest daughter. At her birth, there was joy and so much to be thankful for. In their arms, she moved and looked lovingly at them, first-time parents. She was a gem, a precious little one, who chose them to be her parents. As parents, they were grateful. Afifah Munirah, they named her. A girl, so bright and had so much potential, she was living her dream, and enjoying her days as a junior college student. There was so much promise. She had so much promise; extinguished in an instant. A black car, which Afifah and Mr Muhammad Azril were reportedly in, turned turtle in the middle of the road. Debris from the crash was scattered across the road. A tragic metaphor of a family and its many hopes and futures - completely overturned. The potential of a young bright lady, no more. A future that was so proud, so glorious. Only clear and unfiltered darkness today. Today, at their Pasir Ris flat, there is grief, silence and cries that bleed the heart. Today, a family is shattered – Their 2024 Raya family photo was their last, as one complete family. Today, in a classroom, where attendance will never be full, sits a table empty and forlorn – At the end of 2025, she will graduate in absentia. One can only imagine the call at the other end, informing the wife and mother of this multi-vehicle accident, where both her husband and her eldest, both her beloved, were not mere bystanders. At the receiving end, her heart would have sunk. And Afifah Munirah’s two sisters. How are they doing right now? They might never be whole again. Their role model, the sister whom they looked up to, is now bruised and lifeless. They are a mess of emotions right now. We can offer condolences and commiserations. But to the family of Mr Muhammad Azril, they are mere words of consolations. If only time could bring them back to the evening of 21 April 2024, when they tucked her to bed with a good night kiss; Or the early morning of 22 April 2024, the last time they had breakfast together. Today, a family broken, and a school, a community and nation united by grief. The day after, they returned to a home without a daughter and a sister. Silences, Echoes and Intermittent wailings. At that junction on the morning of 22 April were debris. To the family of Mr Muhammad Azril, they very much represent a shattered family, who, in the wake of this tragedy, will spend a lifetime trying to pick up those pieces. 𝑀𝑎𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑒 𝑎𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑒!
