| 2 | ⚡️Advanced compression tactics!⚡️
1. Attack Time
The attack parameter determines how fast your compressor reacts once your audio hits it strong enough for it to react. A very fast attack reacts right away. A slower attack keeps the initial impact of your audio intact and comes in after a while (in relative terms! We're talking milliseconds here).
You should try slower attack times (between 10 - 25ms) if you want to keep the initial impact, and control what happens after. In other words, turn up the attack time if your audio loses impact (for example, the drums don't hit anymore, or the funky guitar doesn't feel as funky anymore).
2. Release Time
The release parameter determines how fast your compressor lets go of the audio again once the audio falls below the threshold. When you think of a sound with a strong attack and a sustain (like a strummed acoustic guitar, or an EDM-style piano), usually the loud attack is what will trigger the compressor.
When you have a slow release, the compressor will keep the audio down even after the initial attack, which could lead to some of the softer textures going missing.
On the other hand, if you set the release to very short (under 100ms), the compressor will let go quickly, leading to the softer tail end of your sound coming up while the louder parts can be controlled.
This can be interesting for aggressive rap parts, brass stabs, and in general all kinds of sound sources where you want to support the upfront energy and enhance this specific emotion.
In general, your compression game will become a lot more nuanced (and simple) when you think in terms of enhancing emotion instead of "which sound needs which settings".
Try a couple attack/release combinations (like fast/fast, slow/slow/ fast/slow and slow/fast) to get a feel how differently they affect your music. And then choose which one helps you get the result you want!

| 10 | 💡Here are five tips and tricks for mixing and mastering:
1. Reference Tracks: Use reference tracks from professionally mixed and mastered songs in a similar genre. This helps you understand the sound you're aiming for and can guide your decisions during mixing and mastering.
2. EQ with Purpose: Be deliberate when applying equalization (EQ). Cut frequencies that are unnecessary and boost those that enhance the sound. Subtle adjustments can make a significant difference.
3. Dynamic Range: Pay attention to the dynamic range. Use compression and limiting effectively to control peaks and add punch to your mix. Avoid excessive compression, which can result in a lifeless sound.
4. Stereo Imaging: Create a balanced stereo image. Panning and stereo wideners can help instruments sit well in the mix. However, be cautious not to overdo it, as an overly wide mix can sound unnatural.
5. A/B Testing: Continuously A/B test your mix and master. Listen to your work alongside professional tracks to ensure your mix holds up. This helps you identify areas that need improvement.
