On May 10th, 1863, Lieutenant General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson died from complications of pneumonia after he was mortally wounded by friendly fire during the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2nd. He was shot three times, and his left arm was amputated below the shoulder. He was brought to Guinea Station for his protection and recovery. In his final days, Thomas was visited by his wife Mary Anna and their five-month-old daughter Julia, Jackson's only surviving child. It was only the second time he had met his beloved "baby-daughter," calling her his "little darling, sweet one... little comforter." Thomas developed pneumonia, and his condition deteriorated until he died at 3:15 pm. on May 10th, a Sunday. His Last Words were recorded by Hunter McGuire, who was Jackson's Physician. "A few moments before he died, he cried out in his delirium, 'Order A.P. Hill for action! Pass the infantry to the front rapidly! Tell Major Hawks-' then stopped, leaving the sentence unfinished. Presently, a smile of ineffable sweetness spread itself over his pale face, and he said quietly, and with an expression, as if of relief, 'Let us cross over the river and rest in the shade of the trees;' and then, without pain, or the least struggle, his spirit passed from earth to the God who gave it."
