| 8 |  St. Patrick’s Cathedral was once mocked for being built too far outside New York City. Today it sits right in the middle of Manhattan on Fifth Avenue.
In 1853, Archbishop John Hughes announced plans for a new cathedral for New York’s growing Catholic population. Architect James Renwick Jr. designed it in the Gothic Revival style, with a white marble exterior. At the time, the location between 50th and 51st Streets seemed far removed from the center of the city, and some critics dismissed the project as “Hughes’ Folly.”
Hughes believed New York would eventually grow around it.
He was right.
The cornerstone was laid in 1858, but construction stopped during the Civil War. Work resumed afterward, and St. Patrick’s opened in 1879. The two spires were completed in 1888.
By then, the city was already catching up.
Walk past the cathedral now and the contrast is hard to miss. Fifth Avenue traffic moves outside. Office towers rise around it. Rockefeller Center sits nearby. | 380 |
